Any Ohm Walsh fans? - question

slowpat

Slowly but surely....
I picked up a pair of Ohm Model F's last week. The classic Walsh drivers were swapped out with a newer cone (F200 I believe) which was a traditional cylinder 9" tall and 9" in diameter. The cabinets are the Model F cabinets. I love the sound, but one driver was making fluttering noise (so, I believe the woofer surrounds are half gone.) I heard back from Ohm that it will cost $250 to "maintain" the pair. I was wondering with shipping to and from, plus the $250, am I putting too much money into this? Any Ohm fans out there? Thanks.

I have the F-2's with original F cab's and depending on what initially you paid, I would say, why not...They are a fantastic speaker when working correctly.

If you know anything about refoaming I would do them myself, I have a pair here that I am going to do. I don't see huge profit returns with ohm's to warrant sending them in for repair. Now if you plan to keep them for the rest of your life, it may be worth it but if your ever looking to recoup your investment then no.

Hey J - I now remember you mentioned a pair as well. My problem is this - how do I get into that d**n canister? :worried: I "AM" looking to recoup at the very least, so I agree it's not worthwhile to ship them off...

I have a pair of Ohm Walsh 2 - love them, great speaker. F can only be better. I am a diy'er tho and would do it myself. Search around as there are threads about getting into the canister. Once in, don;t be shocked though - people make fun of Bose because the drivers look cheap - wait until u see the inside of the Ohm -all together tho, they sure work great

Good idea about searching the threads first. I'm a DIY'er as well, thus trying to justify sending them off. I initially took off the 4 screws to the base, but that didn't loosen the canister off the base, so I thought these were welded or something. I'll start searching.... thanks :)

Its easy just unscrew the can from the wood, use a small screw driver and work the bottom screen off, its glued but slow working around will get it off. The the top of the can is glued on, I hear you have to use heat to get the glue lose to get the can off. Haven't tired it yet though. But with the bottom screen off you can see if the foam is bad or not. Now I was thinking and since the woofer hangs upside down the spider may be worn out too, and this is why the price is so high. They have to redo all the suspension. Heres a photo I found somewhere on the forum. I won't use shims when I do min but the directions are good.

Cool..thanks J...I think it's worth a shot if the surrounds are not totally gone.

I just tested a pair of Walsh 4 drivers where the owner had changed the surrounds himself since he had "done many woofers himself in the last twenty years". They had a 10 dB resonance in the middle of the voice range. I don't want speakers sounding this bad in the field, so I made a deal with him. It is an offer I will extend to all AK members: you can get Walsh 4, 4XO and 3XO driver maintenance for $150 per pair which includes changing the surrounds, changing the electrolytic caps to film, testing and matching to each other with in +/- 1dB over their main frequency range. Just mention this post.

So John, I sent mine in for "Highs Maintenance" or what ever you called a couple of years ago. So I know that's a great deal, but I'm glad I did it, even if I had to pay full price. Mine are 3XO's and they are great speakers. But what I want to know is did I get all that done to mine?

Thanks, and please excuse the hijack, Cooljjay.

I don't have a pair of Ohm speakers (wish I did) but I'd like to say that this is an amazingly cool and forward thinking offer. Kudos on good management and good karma!

I would definitely take him up on this offer, please read some of the threads on refoaming Ohms. It's not easy! My 2 cents on the subject.

I am going to take you up on this for my Walsh 4. As far as shipping from Canada goes, will the turnaround take longer?

I'd be all over this if the offer applied to the F's!

My 4's are still sounding great :music: but if they didn't this is a great deal and I'd send them in next week!

I am just getting around to this but I am having some trouble with boxing the cans up with enough protection to survive the trip to NY from Saskatchewan.
I am going to buy some sheet foam and cardboard. Should I send them as a pair or individually? I was thinking that a single can might be lighter which is easier to handle?

I would pack one in each box. Yes...you may need to pay a little extra on shipping, but you have more control over packing each one. I would bubble wrap each can up to 3" in each direction before putting it into a box lined w/ the sheet foam. That way, the can is riding on air...otherwise, the foam can still transmit the shock to the can. But more importantly, that the can is packed really well when being shipped back to you after the refoam.

That is a good deal,it cost me $700 with shipping to for them to do the same thing 2 years ago. I currently have Ohm A's,Walsh 2's and Walsh 4's.

This packing is driving me crazy. I finished one can and a friend who was over and told me to try again. He has had some bad experiences shipping things and seems to know whats required.
I guess the cardboard I bought is to light/thin. And the bubble wrap is also to thin as is the foam.
So he is going to drop off some thicker bubble wrap and some foam that is used for insulation. And I am going back to Home Depot for some cardboard......
