Any thoughts on Bottleheads Paramour monoblocks kit?

I'm wondering if it will really be necessary to go the DIY route with speakers. The guy at Bottledhead said he could mostly only give advice on what DIY would be good because he's not too familiar with brand name speakers. He did say Klipsch would be a good idea if I were not going to build my own. The RB-35 speakers I mentioned earlier look very nice to me, they're not that expensive, and honestly I'm not too concerned about bass. I'm in a very small room for now, and I'll get bigger speakers later.

What's involved in putting your own speakers together? You just buy the woofers and tweeters you want and install them in a cabinet?

Regarding soldering irons:

A temperature controlled unit is very desirable.

I bought a Solomon SR-??? from Circuit Specialists in Mesa , Arizona for $35 a couple years ago. It is now $39. this is an excellent unit that is still working like new after soldering 20+ kits. They also sell additional tips.

There is a website called audiologica that is part of the tangentsoft website. Mr. Tangent has some very good movies on it teaching soldering techniques.

I've been reading up on soldering to get ready, but I'd really like to see some videos too. As a "baby" step to prepare for the real thing I got a really neat kit from All Electronics for a tiny solid state single channel 7 watt amplifier. It's literally about 2" by 2", and looks like it will be very simple to put together. The tricky part will be putting together a proper power supply, but I think I can do it. This just seems like a good idea to me, I obviously don't want my first soldering experience to be the Bottlehead kits.
 
As far a klipsch go i would look for a heratage speaker before a new one.I own a much modified heresy 2.Bigger ported box upgraded crossovers and Different titanium tweeters.The heresy is the cheapest you can get and if you don't care about base its perfect for you.You can get a 2 for 300 to 350 alot of the time off ebay.The klipsch lovers prefer the heresy 1 though they say it sounds better.Its also more effecent.like 98 or 99 db.There is a klipsch forum at their websight called updates and modifications.Its quite good for info on mild to wild klipsch based speakers.Ask there how they like the rb 35.As far as diy its alot of work You either need to use someone elses project or run alot of sims with the various computer programs.In the end you can come up with something thats as good as something that would of cost you thousands of dollars more to buy new.Ive done it 4 times now I couldent afford to buy what i built diy.
 
I have been following this thread, please keep us informed on your progress. I am very interested in how everything works out for you, as I have also considered the Bottlehead kits. I have put together some Heathkits and recently one of the S5 tube amps and I will say that your soldering skills can make or break a kit. I think you are smart to get some small kits to practice on but once you get the hang of it it is easy.
It has been mentioned that tubes are very addicting and I will definatly second that.

Yes they are addictive, and yes I will keep you updated, but remember I probably won't even get the kits for another month.
 
For speakers I recommend Heresey's or I HIGHLY recommend Tekton 4.5's. I bought a pair of Bubinga veneered on ebay directly from Tekton for $309 with free shipping.

They are a Fostex full range driver based speaker. The huge soundstage and imaging with SETs is incredible. I sold them to finance my La Scalas and I wish I didn't need to. That is the second biggest seller's regret I've had with audio. The first being a pair of JBL L300 Summits.

I still like the La Skalas better but those Tektons were amazing.

The Bottlehead stuff is so cool. I'm thinking about buying a S.E.X amp kit as a horn amp if I ever go active, I already use the 6EM7's it uses in my current amps, they're dirt cheap NOS...
