Any Vintage Onkyo Owners?

I use a T-9 tuner in my main rig and have a TX-5000 as one of my spares.

Glad to see so many T-9 users here!

Tx-4500

I've got a TX-4500 receiver.
I rarely listen to the tuner (nothin' worth listening to except talk shows- and who needs high fidelity for that?).
It sounds fine with my CDs, but I LOVE the phono preamp. I always thought that people claiming that vinyl sounded better than CDs were just being "retro-grouches"... Until I played some records on this thing!
This receiver sounds good with CDs, but in my experience, it's performance with vinyl is amazing.
(I'm using it with a very modest phono setup- vintage '79 Connoisseur turntable with ShureM97xE cartridge. My speakers are equally modest- vintage '69 Fisher XP7's stacked with AR4x... but I'm happy!)

A7070 integrated amp.
TA2060, TA2080 cassettes. The Onkyo cassettes used the same mechanism as the Nakamichi BX series. You can buy them cheap since the all need idler tires. These are great, natural sounding decks!

I've been running one T-9 in the lower level, mated with the POA-2200/C-383/HPM-900 system. Up here, I have the other T-9 that I've been content to have sitting unused, because I have a nice ST-8080 in place. BUT, I've had that set up for about 3 years, and am feeling the need to rotate gear.

I'm fortunate enough to own a A-10/T-9 rig, a Tx-2500 and the best damned audio piece I've ever heard to date, the venerable TX-8500. This receiver just fits my ears to a tee. I've owned CJ mv50/pv6, HKCitV/Pas3, Kora Design 30, Jolita, numerous Fisher 500c's, Fisher x-100-3 (favorite tube amp), Marantz 8/7, several Scotts and a bunch of SS amps and receivers. I think the big Onk delivers the best control with a smooth touch. The proverbial "velvet glove". Just my ears I guess. To each his own.

Have a TX-2500MKII that sounds much better than it has a right to. Does have a problem with the phono stage but I have mainly used it in the garage with the CDP.

Also have (not vintage) a TX-SV717PRO which I think was near TOTL of their A/V when I bought it - so far haven't had much of an urge to upgrade on the HT side.

I have a TX-6500 Mkll (100/rms), A TX-5000 (65/), A TX-2500 Mkll (40/) and a TX-2000 (27/) I've owned the 2500 since 1988 with no problems - Well made and reliable stuff!

Not quite vintage, but more than 15 years old...

I have an Onkyo A-809 integrated amp that I picked up last fall and a T-407 tuner that I got in January. I'm using both in my 2 channel system. These are both from from the 1991ish model years.

The amp is very well built and weighs in at around 37lbs. It needed some heavy external and internal cleaning and of course, the usual applications of Deoxit. Since going through it, the sound is very clean and dynamic. The tuner works very well too. They are both remote controllable too (using R1 cable). I've been more than happy with the performance of both.

I have an Onkyo TX-8500 MkII which is truly impressive but needs a tuning knob. Does anyone have one or know if others in the TX series share the same tuning knob? Ialso have an Onkyo Integra series TX 65 which will rock the house but should be on the list for ugliest component receiver.

I owned an Onkyo T-15 tuner and A-25 integrated amp (40 w/ch) since 1981. Never a problem. A few times I squirted cleaner in the volume pot on the amp. I sold it recently as it didn't have enough inputs for all I wanted to plug in.

I replaced that pair with an Onkyo P-3200 preamp, T-4000 tuner, and M5140 power amp (105 w/ch). These are c.1989-91 era. And I have a DX-C340 CD changer plugged into it, as well as VCR, DVD player. It's nice being able to jumper all of the Onkyo equipment and run off one remote.

(Update- sold the T-4000 and replaced it with an Onkyo Integra T-4500 tuner. Moved the DX-C340 CD changer to the shop. Now have a DX-C370 CD changer)

Didn't have the original remote for the P-3200, but picked up an Onkyo RC-329s remote, which is for the TX-8511. It works everything well, except it won't switch CD's on the changer. 20 yr old Speakerlab towers with this, soon to be replaced.

In the bedroom I have an Onkyo TX-850 receiver (c.1989) and another DX-C340 CD changer. For only 68 w/ch this receiver performs like a much more powerful receiver. I have an Onkyo dual well cassette deck with that setup, and an Onkyo RC-296s remote works all of that well, again, except for changing CD's on the changer.

(Update- The TX-850 is now pushing some KEF Coda III's in my grand daughter's bedroom. I replaced it with a TX-866 receiver, 80 w/ch)

Out in the shop I have a TX-901, 45 w/ch. (Update, gave this to my brother, he likes!) And a Pioneer changer (now also at my granddaughter's). The shop and bedroom systems are hooked up to Optimus Pro-X55AV speakers. These are the same size as the Minimus 77's, 5" woofer and 1" dome. These do well for what I am using them for.

Surprisingly, the TX-901 has the best FM reception, and is inside a metal shop building with only a 5' piece of wire for an antenna. Tried some other antennas, but the 5' pc of wire worked best. Go figure. :scratch2:

(Update- Now have a TX-906 out in the shop, replacing the TX-901. The TX-906 is 80 w/ch)

(Update- the other receivers have now had filter mods, and perform very well)

Time to update my original post.
I have sold my M-5160 & M-5140 amps.
I still have the two T-9 tuners, one in a system.
I still have the cosmetically damaged TX-7000 (superb sound).

Anybody ever use the ES-300 Surround decoder? I picked one up for a song. 30 w/ch for the rears. Comments?

M-5150 pwr amp
P-3150 preamp
T-4140 tuner
Integra TA-2070 cassette deck

All very nice sounding gear

No, there was a M-5150.

What output chip in the 5160? The 5140 has STK4044V's running at +/-60 v. Perhaps the 5150 used a different chip or some other minor change.

I bought an Onkyo cassette deck, a TA-RW313, as a replacement for my ailing, aging Pioneer CT-W503R deck. Other than a couple of features missing that the Pioneer had, I don't miss it a bit, lol! Much better sounding unit and more solidly construced IMO!
