Anybody using 7189's in Eico HF-81?

Had recommendation to try TheTubeStore 7189's in my HF-81. Currently running Baldwin labeled Sylvanias.

What difference can I expect and any adjustments necessary?

Not sure if your Sylvania Baldwions are Black Plate, but if they are, they sound ,magnificent.

I use ALL 1960s Sylvanis in my HF 81. Couldnt be happier.

a 7189 should safely sub for a 6bq5. Its basically an up-rated 6bq5 tube. You may even be able to play with the bias to run them a little harder, though I dont know what, if any, sonic benefit you'd get. You might get a little more output power but it probably wouldn't be enough to really notice. Those Sylvies, particularly Baldwin-logo ones are not a bad tube though. The organ tubes tended to be select picked for best performance.

They're Russian 6P14P, you're being charged quite a premium for burn-in and matching. I've bought matched quads of those tubes for <$20, if you're concerned about long-term stability, buy 2 quads and if the bias starts to wander throw that tube out and pop in one of the extras.

Well biggest change I got was having Greg from NOSValves go through my Eico. Dan had up'd the capacitor values for tighter bass. And all those high pried yellow caps brightened it.

Here's how it looks now. Mostly Russian PIO caps and a bunch of new carbon resistors. It sounds silly good now :yes:

When I first hooked it up to my Fortes and hit play I just sat there giggling to myself

And I put the Baldwins away for now. Bought 8 6P14P's and Naradow measured best matched quad. Sound great!
