I had heard the name Taj Mahal before, but had no idea what kind of music it was.

Anyone here a fan?

Tell me what you know.

I've seen him live. It was a great show and he was having a ball.
A real nice introduction to the blues.

I'm a fan. He is hard to pin down though. He is a blues guy, but he mixes in a lot of different influences. I've seen him live as well. A great show. I'm not a big fan of the guitar tone he uses, to be honest.

Yes I am. I have a number of older offerings, but I love Senor Blues for the quality of the cuts, both sonically (outstanding) and whatever it is that makes an album worth listening to over and over again. (....this dance is gonna be a drag....)

there's a very nice three cd set from Taj Mahal (his first two albums & a somewhat later one, I think) in the "Original Album Classics" series - an import. Available from Amazon for $24.50 - OR - available from Amazon.co.uk for 9 GBP plus very reasonable postage (assuming you're in the States, the direct from UK buy is a real deal).

The Essential Taj Mahal (two cd set) is a nice overview of his career, I think.

He's a great contemporary bluesman.

off-topic, but there are a number of great deals in the original album classics (Sony), and original album series (Warners, I think) series - blues, jazz, rock - and many are cheaper direct from amazon uk than from amazon US.

I'm a big Taj Mahal fan. I have a great Prairie Home Companion show that he did with the great Doc Watson. Doc and his son Merle are in my avatar. I love the blues and bluegrass music. Taj has done some stuff with African musicians too that is quite different but I like it. One disc that I have is called Kulanjan. He seems like a great guy and a class act.

Take A Giant Step
Annie's Lover
Fishin' Blues
Farther On Down The Road

Get his "Giant Step" album. Early stuff is always good stuff.

I picked up these two RTR tapes as part of a group of tapes that I purchased this week.

I have listened to them today. Very interesting and pleasant to listen to.

I welcome more comments about the artist.

He can be a fun listen. He definitely wove a variety of styles through his albums. His first album (self titled) is fantastic electric blues. I believe I have a copy of "the Natch'l Blues" kicking around, it was very good as well, but quite different.

Curious timing on this topic, by the way. I was throwing out old boxes, and ran across a odd one. I suppose it's completely "clean" since it was put out in the 90's, but..well, it's called "Br'er rabbit and the wonderful tar baby":scratch2:. Anyway, that's not the interesting thing. It's read by Danny Glover, and features a soundtrack by, you guessed it, Taj Mahal. Not sure if it's a game or interactive story (may even be a VHS).

Here is a link to the opening...not anything fantastic from Mr.Mahal, but a very pleasent backing track. Danny Glover is surprisingly fitting.

The Real Thing

is the one to get and I agree with everyone that suggested it. Just put on "You ain't no street walkin Momma but you sure know how to strut your stuff" and kick back for 18 minutes+. A good live recording with some of his early stuff being displayed. Then go from there

Taj did a direct-to-disc LP many years ago called "Live and Direct" with "The International Rhythm Band". It's kind of free-form, but the fidelity is way good - even on the budget CD reissues.

Been a fan since I saw him many many years ago in a club in Woodstock. He is an experimental blues guy. The Real Thing is great, especially when you need some tuba in your blues!. His first and natchl, oh so good, giant step/de ole folks are all good too. I think there is another acoustic album, that I can't recall the name that was very good too.

Tuba blues are awesome! In small doses, anyway. I've got a BB King album with some tuba on it that I really like. I think Taj and some of his tuba guys play on it. I'm pretty sure it is called L.A. Midnight.

In addition to some of the other recommendations of Taj's music, I would add to the list: Phantom Blues, Dancing The Blues, & Like Never Before. I think Senor Blues is his best record that I own and will gladly be the 5th or so person to tell you to grab that one.
