Anyone here collect older electric guitars?

Just wondering if anyone here collects older electric guitars? Like Teisco, Silvertone, Ovation or maybe some other brands. I have some interest in aquiring some older Japanese electric guitars I've seen on craigslist. I know that like older audio gear, it will probably take some work to get these guys up to par. I've seen some comments that these older guitars have a different sound then the newer ones?
I know that older LPs and Strats are worth a few bucks, but I'm not into collecting for monetary value. I just like to have some examples of the older, not so famous guitars.

Hey Chill, you gotta come visit some day, dammit! There's a '68 Teisco here, and I've had dozens over the years. Silvertones, too. In fact, I know where there's a Teisco collecting dust behind a friend's couch, might just grab it next time I'm in NY & set it up with flatwounds. I'm still sitting on a bunch of spare parts, too, including a near-complete Univox Les Paul copy that could be a fun project if you want to take it on together & learn some stuff.

I'll keep an eye open for you, and feel free to ask Qs if you have a line on one. Unfortunately, they've started to become pricey on E-Bay.

Yes, I definitely have to pay you a visit soon! Would be interested in learning what I can, pretty much a newbie in this area!
The Teiscos and others I've seen on craigslist aren't too pricey, usually in the $100-$150 range.
Don't have the Squire bullet now, traded it in. I now have a Washburn, an AXL and a Style 101. Also picked up a Rocktron R50C amp, I think it has twin 10" speakers in it.
I'll post some pics in the next couple of days.

1981 MIJ Suier Bullet

Original pickup coils open on two of them, replaced with Seymour Duncans, SSL-2 in neck and bridge, JB Junior in middle.

Replaced 5 position switch

Heavily shielded

Star grounding

Ground fault protection

I just got her out of the shop for work I wasn't confident in doing - new nut, dressed the frets, set intonation and trussrod.

Now I need a good amp - I played her through a Hughes and Kettner Blues Master head into a 1 12" cabinet at a local used guitar shop - Sweet! I looked at all of his guitars and he has many on your list, including another Squire Bullet just like mine! His prices are a little steep, though. If i remember right, he wanted $385 for the Bullet. Lemme know if you want the shopowner's contact info, he is located in Huntsville, AL.

Yesterday I talked to a guy who picked up an old Gibson from the GW. He was just buying it. 99 cents. Why? It looked as if the kids in the back had done a Who to it. Though all the electronics were good. They could not believe he wanted it. Little did they know that the pickups were worth a bit of coin.

I'm not sure if they smashed a perfectly good guitar :sing: but I can't imagine anyone would take a broken one to the thrift, unless they thought someone could use the parts. Of course, today the case was there, so I can assume it was in one piece when it came in.

I'm not too into the older Tiedescos and Japanese stuff from the 60's, but I do have a LP copy from the 70's that is way cool. Could not find any identifying marks on it, so it may be a Univox or a Crest...
The other old stuff I have is a 66 Fender Mustang, 75 Fender Mustang, 78 Ibanez Artist, and a 83 MIJ Fender Strat...

I also see a Dano U2 (front, left). Those are great guitars, but I've found raising the pickups a bit improves them. :yes:

It's a baritone, actually. Lots of fun, makes me play differently for sure.

I just sold my Ibanez Talman with lipstick pickups, and the Danelectro is likely to be next on the chopping block, unfortunately. We'll see...

The Dano Baritones were used on many early classic RnR songs. :yes:

I bought a Tempo 60's/70's bass guitar MIJ for 100 shipped. THe guy claimed it had mojo. Turned out that mojo meant a fretboard that was peeling off, a broken tuner, and holes in the body. Well, I fixed it, sold it, and haven't bought another since... Although I do own a 79' peavey t-40...

Well, not guitars but amps: my brother found an old Fender Bandmaster head in a SA in Chicago a few years ago for $5; grabbed it without looking too closely at it--it was an early '68, first year of the CBS silver face but with the old blackface circuit. He took it to his amp tech and it was trashed; he ended up putting another $175 into it to restore it! Then decided it didn't suit his style so I took it off his hands. I love it, it gives a great blues sound with a good Fender Strat. It still has "$5" marked in felt pen on the hardware for the handle; I left it on for fun! I use it with an old '60s small 2x12 Fender cab that I bought cheap and restored, it needed a new back and baffle plus grill cloth and hardware. Has EV SRO's that someone added in the '70s--loud as hell but incredibly heavy! I have been considering swapping them out for something closer to stock... My other amps are a sweet little '70s Fender Princeton Reverb and an old Randall twin; no good stories about them though!

I've got a Randall footswitch lying around, I think it's for the old 2RU rack mount heads.

I used to get all the blown Fender Bassman/Bandmaster/etc. heads I could load onto handtrucks back in the mid-80s, nobody wanted them. My fave was a John Nau-modded Bandmaster head into a 2 x 10" cab. Now I've got one of John's custom preamps, based on the Mesa 22.

Got an SRO in a wedge monitor, too...what a beast!
