Anyone Into Yamaha Pro Amplifiers: PC2002M

I know a couple of folks here have some, some with the meters some with out, I like the meters! I fact it's on my list of fish to try to catch.
 
Sam, I'm surprised that you are giving Yamaha another shot considering your recent luck with brand Y! I see these pro amps every so often and I think about picking one up.

My main separates system uses a M-85 (yeah I know, firecracker) and a BGW 750E running my B-380 and I've considered getting a Yamaha Pro amp to replace the M-85 or another BGW for the mains. What are your impressions so far? For me, the BGW sets a high standard. You talk about G loads, well the BGW's each get time on a shaker table before they are boxed to weed out any defects.

Does the Yammie run hot when pushed? I think they have a pair of fans blowing over the outputs?
 
I love my PC2002M. Sounds great with either a Yamaha C-65 or CR-1020 as a preamp powering the Kappas.

I've read that before, and the amplifier design appears to be the same.

Mine gets fairly warm, but never scalding hot... I usually don't run too much power though. I don't recall seeing any fans, but I didn't look too closely.

Bigears: A friend of mine bought one and I got to hear it in action. It is supremely powerful and has absolutely no problem driving my NS-1000M's. I ran my PC2002M at about 10 wpc, which is about as loud as I can stand these days. The amp ran just above room temperature.

There are no fans inside. Just huge heatsinks.

If the PC2002M is the pro version of the M-2, that would make the PC2002M a true bargain.

Do you have a nudie of the M-2 so we can compare the internal layout?
 
While I don't have any Yamaha pro amps (no room :D) I think there are some very good ones, particularly the models from the '80's.

The PC2002M is the pro version of the M-2 (or is the M-2 the home version of the PC2002M?) I've got an M-2 and it's nice amp.
 
Four P2100s here, had them for 20+ years now. Ran them for theater PA work, concert sound (as highs for 3-ways), home theater (one even bridged for a sub), and now one is recording studio playback (JBL L100s), one is control room playback (JBL L110s), one is vocal monitors and one is at HJames' house 'cause she wanted to check it out. I love the sound of them, very clean and quiet and accurate.

Two repairs I can think of on all 4 in 20+ years- one was a mechanical issue from being bounced around in road cases (just tinning up some male-female connection interfaces) and one was a channel running hot & setting off the thermal shutdown ("leaky transistor" was the diagnosis). Not bad for all the miles I've put on these.

Saw you just picked up another PC2002M, albeit with some issues. I was in touch with the seller and they couldn't provide much more info on the faults. I didn't pull the trigger on it because of that but glad you got it. Also, they will allow local pickup so you might be able to save some packing and shipping if you feel the trip to Gardena is worth it time and gas-wise.

Looks cosmetically good. You gonna have Tom check it out and get it repaired? Hopefully it will not involve a transformer or some major, major surgery.

Drooling at the possibility of two of these babies bridged???

They are only approved for 8 ohm operation for some reason... but they handle low impedances just fine... there is even a graph that shows the power output down to 2 ohm on the manual.


Or did you mean THD or other things aside from power output?
 
Nice amps -- I had one, and it was a savage. Looked like you could drop it off the roof and it wouldn't hurt it much, and it sounded great.

Hey Bart:

Yeah, that was me. Local pickup was the only way this made sense. And yes, I'll take it into Tom's for a look. They way it is described gives me hope the outputs are good and maybe this is an easy fix. The fact it powers up some tells me the tranny is probably good. Anyways, I think this is worth the gamble.

I'm planning on getting three PC2002M's to run my NS-1000M's. I'd like to create a "wall of sound" with these. I've also thought about turning them into 700 watt mono-blocks. This is overkill as the 240 watt 2 channel mode drives the NS-1000M with ease.

I downloaded the manual for the PC2002M over at Yamaha.com and it is rather technical. Yamaha published graphs of test results. Of most interest to me is the square wave test results done at 20 Hz, 1 kHz, and 20 kHz. The traces look good which translates to good sound. The manual states the PC2002M is engineered for the high G-load environment of the road. I think that is a good trade-off for a few less watts, which I don't think I would miss. Anyways, the M-2 looks like a beast...
 
If the PC2002M is as good as the P2200, then I would quite happily own one. I ran a bank of P2200 when I me and a couple of mates owned a DJ setup and those amps could do things that no other amp could. I could tell stories about those times and situations we ended up in when we were DJing with those amps, but many are XXX rated:D.
 
Yamaha PC2002m

Three years ago I purchased a Yamaha PC2002 (no meters) off Ebay for around $150 shipped, excellent cosmetic/mechanical condition. Smooth/powerful amp, not a burp out of it, understand it was fairly expensive in it's day (mid 80s).
