Anyone Into Yamaha Pro Amplifiers: PC2002M

My school uses one in the mobile sound cart, and it gets lots of use as a PA amp.....

only one problem: We usually have it running so many speakers that it clips. We also run them stupid loud and I always have earplugs.

2 JBL Champagne speakers with 4 10" woofers (130 pounds each), and 4 EV PA speakers (new plastic ****). All off of a bridged PC2002. :D

There's a smaller yamaha pro amp of the same design under it in the rack (no space betwen and it never gets hot) that I always run to the JBL's when I hook up the system. And people always wonder why I can get everything louder and cleaner than everyone else :D
 
I pickup my second PC2002M on Monday. Once I get it fixed, I'm going to run two pairs of NS-1000M's.

Hey VinylDavid,

Try to find out what the model number of the bottom amp is. Likely its a PC2002 without the M, which is the no meter model, or the PC1002 which is shorter and only 100W/channel. If not, could be the earlier P2201 no meter amp.

IIRC it's the 1002. :yes: Coulden't remember which way the model number changed.

And the ones in the sound cart haveno meters. so PC1002 and PC2002.



(and a tascam DA-30 which I want just to say I have it lol)

yep that's it.

We actually have good audio stuff.....but our power is NOT good. Neither are our EV speaker. But we have a HUGE Mackie amp in the tech booth and a 1200w QSC for other uses....like sound effects behind the stage and elseware....

In our theater, the power coming into the school was not grounded right so we have BAD ground hums.

We also have mice that have chewed up the house snake, so a lot of our mic connectors don't work.

But we are putting a mini fridge in the tech booth next year. :D

We also have mice that have chewed up the house snake, so a lot of our mic connectors don't work.

But we are putting a mini fridge in the tech booth next year. :D

Keep the mini-fridge off the sound system's power circuits, or expect a loud *SNAP* through your speakers every time that sucker cycles on.

I think that is a good trade-off for a few less watts, which I don't think I would miss.

It is not only the watts, it is also the rest - not much but it is there.

6 x 8 ohm in series on a mono amp would result in a 1/4 ohm load!!!
No wounder the amp is clipping, keep it at max 2 ohm (4 is better).

I would recoment that you switch the amp's next time so you use the PC2002 on the JBL's and the PC1002 on the EV plastic (if possible, cut one EV speaker so the amp only has a 2 ohm load).

BTW: That this PC2002 did not explode by now sayes somthing about the quality and why it was so popular in the live scene.
 
It is not only the watts, it is also the rest - not much but it is there.

Yamaha still has the M-2 manual on the Global Site so I checked out the spec sheet. Both the M-2 and PC2002M are rated at 240 wpc into 8 ohm. The M-2 stat sheet is less detailed than the PC2002M spec sheet but they appear to be the same. What else are you thinking of besides the obvious second speaker hookup and LED meters?
 
THD 0.05% vs. 0.005%
Harmonic distortion 0.007% vs. 0.004%
IM Distortion 0.01% vs. 0.002% (this one is a little tricky since the PC2002 is @ 8ohm 120W and the M-2 is @ 8ohm 60w, so this might just be a little play with numbers).

But channel seperation is better in the PC2002 vs. the M-2, so it is a little up and down.

Hmmmmm..... :yikes::yikes::yikes: next time we have he sound cart out and connected, I'll remember to bring that up......I had been wondering why we were clipping at such a low point.

I'll try to run 2 off each channel of the 2002 and the JBL's off of the 1002.....or I can bring in my Peavey CS-400 bridged to mono for that....

I am not surprised that it is still truckin.....it's built like a tank (I'va had to move the sound cart up 3 steps once........'nuff said), but I'll work on getting a good wiring system set up so that every amp sees a minimum 2-ohm load.
 
I picked up my second PC2002M this afternoon. The seller thought it was shutting off after a few seconds but I think he wasn't sure how the protection lights work. Anyways, my second PC2002M works perfectly. I ran it for several hours this afternoon without any problems. Now to get a third on and a HT preamp and I'm set.

Darn!!! Coulda woulda shoulda pulled the trigger on that amp at least 2 days sooner but glad you got a great working example of the PC2002M!! Goes to show ya that quality will win out.

The snake might be as much or more of a reason for the hum than the grounds. :scratch2:

Nah. We've had electricians come in and look. It's the grounds. AND.....we have the hum from most every input....we don't actually use the house snake all that often anymore....we've gone wireless. :D

Ironically, the massive lighting system does not cause is any trouble....

Bart, score one for the good guys!! :banana: I think the protection lights going out was interpreted as shutting down when in fact the opposite is true. I'm way ahead on my "gamble" buys so it is OK to take a flier every once in awhile!!!! :D:D:D
 
It's a means to connect the grounds of a few different circuits together through a power distibution panel.

Ground loops form when the grounds are not all at the same (or very similar) electrical potential. So, if they're tied together, the difference in potential is eliminated or greatly reduced.
