Anyone recommend good value $peakers

New to AudioKarma (just over a week) and I must say, I'm glad this site exists. Feedback on several of my posts have been timely and valuable.

Just hooked up my newly received Pioneer SX-535 with a pair of Pinnacle PN5 speakers. Seems OK, but I'm looking for the AKers to possibly recommend, possibly, a better pair of speakers - vintage or new(er) in the $150+/- range (ea.). Any thoughts gang?

Also getting a Marantz 2226B next week and can't wait to compare it's sound to the 535. Any comments on what to expect or other's experiences with either receiver?

Next, I'm looking into a turntable. Think I had a Technics SL-1300 or something like that decades ago but sold it when I moved.

Pinnacles should be great sounding little speakers, but the mellow/warm sound from that particular pioneer may not be an ideal match for them. Try ADS speakers with your Pioneer. Maybe the Marantz will sound a little better with the Pinnacles. It's all about what sounds good with what. Synergy.

Any "reasonable cost" ADS's you'd recommend?

Large bookshelf or not-so-large floor standing. Vintage or new(er).

I had an SX-450 matched with some Pioneer HPM 40's back in the day. Very nice. KLH Model 6's would also match up well. They can both be bought for around a C note or less on a good day.

Chances are probably about 50/50 that the receivers you mention would've originally been used with a pair of the following, in no particular order: Dynaco A25, Epi 100, AR-4x, Smaller Advent. So if you're interested in recreating the Swinging Seventies in the privacy of your own home these are some possibilities you might consider. Lots of people, not all of them stoned, used to think these speakers sounded pretty bitchin'. Heck, a lot of people still do. And, again, not all of them stoned. At least I don't think so. No way of knowing for sure.

How large is your room and how far from the speakers do you sit?

Knowing these things will help narrow down the field.

Speakers are for the "Man-Cave." 25' x 20' - I have some Pinnacle PN5+'s in there now and they sound OK, but would like, at times, to crank it up with and have some reasonable bass. Receiver is Pioneer SX-535. I know it's not a powerhouse by any means, but it really sounds clean.

Looking at some ADS L570 or 620's but the price of the L570's are kinda what I'd like to spend. I have a shot at Advent Small Loudspeakers but have a concern about real old speakers. I'm quite handy though with replacing any electronic anything as needed. Also searching for some Pinnacle PN8's for the cave. So feedback from all is quite welcomed.
 
When I decided to downsize I checked out a bunch of stand mount sized speakers. A great speaker on the used market that can be had for $150 or less is the Energy C-22 Connoisseur.
I also owned a set of Pinnacle PN8+. To me the Energy sounded better.
 
Wharfedale W60D's and W60E's go cheap on the 'bay quite often. Find a pair, recap them, and give them adequate power from a warmish, tubelike source (or a real tube amp), and they'll put out some serious sound for very-little money (You can stand them upright or place them on their sides... They were designed to do well with both, but side-placement works best IMO, as long as the tweeters are still at eye-level, which means having them raised off the floor quite a bit). I've even seen the big W90's going for as low as $150 (That's a LARGE speaker though). You can also look for the Wharfedale E50 or E70. A more-modern sound, but still very-smooth. All these old Wharfedale models tend to fly under the radar (despite the $40,000 a pair price tag on the modern Airedale Heritage, which is a reissue of the old, early '60's Airedale).

There's also Epi. The M100, M150, and M250 are all worth a try. And someone already mentioned KLH.
 
To the OP: With a room that large, you might want to consider a larger pair of speakers (I'd love to try my W90's in a room that large... A pair of the ported, 3-way W70's would sound delightful in that room, and they can quite-often be found for $150-$200). There are lots of large sleeper speakers out there that sound incredible despite selling for peanuts on the used market. Budget is always a concern for me, so I've always stuck with the low-flying gear.
