Thank you for those words of insight, I only minored in economics in college. My comment was that I personally don't think that a 50WPC Marantz receiver is worth $860. Regardless of color, rarity or anything else.
Hello Marantzfan,
One consideration is that this baby did come with the Walnut Case. Again, all in the eye of the beholder, but I have on occasion seen NOS pristine Walnut cases go for $275 a pop in the past, and wouldn't surprise me if one popped up today, that somebody out there would spring $500 for one, just to wrap thier vintage Marantz in this gorgeous wood.
From what I can see from these pics, this particular Marantz seemed to also sport a Black Dial Face as well? Am I correct about this?
You, and others may recall my mention of once owning the Black Face 2285B, and mine, which the exact one I had, had a Silver Dial Face, and can be seen on Ben Blish's Site. (As well as the matching 5025 Cassette Deck)
After I had aquired this absolutely museum perfect pair, I did later acquire a flawless NOS Walnut Case that never had a reciever slid into it. Funny that the buyer didn't want the mint Case to go with, and it was sold to another buyer. I bought the pair for $700 on my birthday, and 3 years later sold the Pair for $900. I was happy that the buyer of the 2285B did also buy the matching Casette, and kept the pair together.
Definitely a stunning rare combination, and I hope the person I sold it to, is still enjoying it's sound, as it was the best sounding Marantz I've ever owned.
Really sweet sound coupled to a pair of my JBL L-65 Jubals, and the FM section was very sensitive, selective, and superb reception.
I paid $175 for the Walnut Case if memory serves me correctly.
Some of you may remember a Black Face 2285B selling for $1400 on the bay some time back.
I have very severe regrets of ever selling that gorgeous reciever/cassette combo. Doubtful I'll ever have another like it in this lifetime.
It's funny how some units just appeared to have just a Faceplate Swapout? Mine did originally come with euro Speaker Jacks on the rear, which were all metal, and also, whcih were replaced evidently by the previous owner, swapped for the conventional Marantz Speaker Jacks (Red/Black Plastic) both Units originally came with Euro AC Plugs/Cords, and had to be converted/changed for US Operation.
It was my understanding as well (according to Ben Blish), that there was also a 2385B Black Face Unit?
Now this baby has definitely got to be a real knockout! Mark
