Apogee Centaur Minor

hey guys - no side-dealing in the public forums - if you want to buy them and resell them, use Bartertown only, ok?

No problem, but - we are intrigued in how it goes.
I don't know that speaker personally - but it looks interesting -
so if you do get them, please post pix and tell us more!

Hi,

Following up with the conversation. I picked them up today and the guy was super helpful. He showed me how to remove the grills (not an easy task, apparently Apogee takes grill security very seriously!) We removed one grill and the woofer and surround was perfect, but for the heck of it we removed the second one. This one the rubber surround had a tear in it and had partially separated from the cone. He was surprised by this - It was obvious by the dust that the grill hadn't been removed lately so I am sure he didn't know. He knocked the price down some and I brought them home. They are very solid (heavy) and seem to be well built. I guess I need to figure out where to get a rubber surround for these! Any advice is appreciated - I haven't started to look yet, but am open to help. He mentioned that a rather knowledgeable gentleman from SC had contacted him about them and had also expressed interest and told him about the grill covers. Is that you Silentnet??

I have attached a few more pics Thanks for your help!

Haha, no, wasn't me, but that's an interesting coincidence! As for where to find proper surrounds, I'd recommend starting a thread asking in general audio or the speaker forum.

I know Vifa are very well thought of in terms of driver manufacturers. Not sure if the surrounds can be replaced or you'll need to replace the driver entirely. Rubber surrounds typically don't go bad...

The link that Beatnik sent ends up being about 35 us dollars for 2 surrounds to fit the woofer. Who knows how long the shipping would take from the NL, but its less than my instant discount today! ($50). I will keep looking, I think I can probably find some more local... Keep the thoughts coming! I am excited to get these speakers up and running!

If I'm seeing that picture correctly, the surround separated from the cone, so can you just reglue the existing surround? I'd just pull that driver and take it to my local speaker repair shop. Don't know if you got one in your neck of the woods.

It has both features - being unglued as well as separated. If you look at around 11 o clock on the speaker you can see the gap. It is torn between about 7 oclock and 11. The other one looks to be perfect, so it may have been replaced at some point.

Hybrid sound

Not that its bad sounding
..Instead just liking open baffle bass as a better match to the ribbon

Think a mod ive seen was simply detaching the binding post box to create a port?

You did well. I just finished a set of Centaur Majors for @Skinnidog and I thought they were phenomenal. Mike? And further thoughts?

They are simply amazing. They image wonderfully and have incredible presence. I listened to them for 2 1/2 hours yesterday with no fatigue whatsoever. They will be my last speaker, and that says a lot for someone who changes them like socks.
