APPJ PA0901 A (Miniwatt N3)

Cubdog, I'm bi-amping each speaker, using the 8ohm tap from one transformer for the woofer and the 4ohm tap from the other transformer for the tweeter. The subwoofer is on a different line from the y-splitter out of the AGI 511A preamp.

Anyone using this little amp with an active preamp? If so, how so, and what is your combo?

The N3 is an integrated amp. Why would you want a preamp?

If it's just for more inputs a switch box is all you need.
 
I wanted to know mostly to see if anyone is 'flavoring' the sound of the Miniwatt with an active preamp, bypassing the simple volume pot of the Miniwatt.
 
I have run mine to an ARC SP16 preamp and I really like it. The only reason I tried it that way is so I could integrate subs into my system as well as more inputs and a remote. I really like the Mniwatt and every now and then I switch it into my main system. I have read that bypassing the volume pot makes it sound better, but I haven't tried it yet. I really like it the way it is.
 
MWalt, have you seen any diagrams or read any instructions on how one could bypass the volume pot in the Miniwatt to use an active preamp to drive it?

My understanding of the mod is this: Usually there are 3 prongs per side on a pot. The first is signal in. Second one is signal out and third is ground. Soldering a jumper on prong one and two should give you full output,
bypassing the pot. You can test that first by touching those two prongs with a screw driver at the same time. Disclaimer: I am NOT a tech, so if I am wrong on this, please somebody correct me. Hope this helps.
 
I bought a N3 and I'm using it with an Accuphase C-200 and Martin Logan LX16 stand mounts (92db) and an M&K sub to great effect. It's still burning in and getting better and better. I would ONLY use this with a preamp. Fun, fun, amplifier...wow factor.

I've had one of these as my main system for three years now and I love it. Running through Omega Super 3T high efficiency speakers. Gives me plenty of juice in a small room.

I just changed the tubes to Sovtek EL84M and Gold Lion 12AX7 and I love it even more. These tubes seem to have improved the whole audio range over the original JJs.
 
My original MW/APPJ S1 is still going strong. It has the diode mod which was a popular mod when it first came out. The S1 is a SET but I believe the N3 is a SEP.

Add to this the Tube Cube 7, from TubeDepot.com It is also a clone of the Miniwatt n3 and Appj PA0901a.

Are there any helpful mods to this amp? It sounds pretty good already.

Any more discussion on tube rolling? If I was just starting, should I swap out the 12AX7 or the EL84 tubes?
