Apple wants to buy Beats

Yep, to the above.

I run iTunes on my Macs but rarely use it because we don't have iPhones or iPods, so no real need to use iTunes.

Our MP3 players are currently Cowon's and we plug them into the PC and drag/drop the songs to the device. Similarly for the android tablets with regards to movies. Just plug the tablet into the PC USB port then drag and drop the movies. So very very simple.

We have a couple of iPads and if someone wants music or movies on them we have to run something called handbrake and do something else, then itunes will load the files onto the iPad.

Apple make some awesome devices, but their method of getting music and movies onto Apple devices is cumbersome.

Beats bought MOG. I wasn't stoked about that, but I continue to subscribe to Beats. I am a huge Apple fanboy, if apple buys beats, I'm cool with that. I just want them to re-instate artist radio. That's the one feature of MOG Beats should have kept.

I still think MOG/Beats is the best $10/mo streaming service.

Is Pandora a similar sort of thing?

Excuse my ignorance on this, as I have never felt the desire to stream but with some changes happening to the house and getting my equipment together, it is something I may look at.

Forbes' analysis

the biggest asset of Beats would be the company’s streaming music service, which offers a much more thorough—and successful—social experience than iTunes. It’s advertised as “The right music for right now,” using a very simple interface crafted especially for the mobile experience. Using the Beats iOS app, the user simply creates a “sentence” explaining where they are, what they’re feeling and who they’re with. Beats then creates a playlist of the appropriate music. There are also additional paths to finding music, including by genre, artist playlist and curator. Once your music is playing, there are additional options to follow artists and explore their work, share playlists and comment on music.

And lastly, and quite frankly, there’s no streaming music service so close to the “the scene” than Beats. Incorporating the Beats technology into iTunes could generate a entirely new list of subscribers for the service, which now has over 800 million accounts.

Interestingly, the Beats music app is available for Android and Windows smartphones, and in a version for desktop computers. It’s not clear if Apple would maintain the apps for the other smartphone brands once the purchase is finalized.

Hmmm..... surely Apple wouldn't do that.... would they? ;)

Since Jobs died Apple has been going downhill. iPhone 5 was a POS that fell apart for many users, the OS is pretty but outdated. While I have my gripes with Android OS as well, it definitely the more advanced one.

If Apple doesn't release a "killer" with the iphone 6 they are pretty much history in a couple of years. I mean they have a ton of money but it won't last forever.

If buying beats for streaming is one step in some bigger idea, then great. The headphones suck as we, and pretty much anyone with internet access knows as well. Heck, some of the fake beats from china have a better sq than the original beats.

Can't help but wonder what Apple is up to... I sold all my Apple shares last year I think it was a sound decision.

Thanks, Chicks for clarifying. I wasn't debating your point as much as trying to understand it. Yes, I think Apple wants a ways to expand their grasp to other platforms and Beats is an easy entry.

I do think the price is a bit high.

As to post Jobs Apple. I think they are doing fine. They have moved beyond MS to become the biggest target and yet hold up very well. They get put under the biggest microscope of any company and still fare well.

MOG was awesome, but MOG is dead. I now get EXACTLY what I got from MOG, 320 MBPS streaming of basically anything but the Beatles, for twice the price, $9.99 vs $4.99. MOG was perfect, so they had to ruin it.

You must have had some nice grandfathered deal. MOG has always been $10 for me.

It makes sense. Apple is not in the streaming music business whatsoever as far as I can see. I personally have never purchased anything from the Apple Store. (they will never have my credit card number).

But I've been on the bubble for subscribing to Spotify or Pandora for quite sometime. Also, I'm sure that there is some arrangement that's mutually beneficial for companies like Spotify / Roku that makes it profitable for both companies to provide streaming music over the Roku hardware.

With Beats Apple can break into the non Apple TV streaming media box market as well. Keep the name brand, keep the interface, and the pnash and just embrace and "absorb" the competition.

My only interest in this deal is if Apple starts offering higher quality downloads for the odd song I want but am unwilling to buy the entire cd from the particular band. This is something that has been rumored & I wonder if this is part of that strategy.

Indeed. If Apple offers "hi-rez," Pono and HD Tracks are dead. But is hi-rez a large enough market? 4K Ultra TV also complicates things. Surely Apple is planning for that contingency if it takes off (unlike 3D).

I'm all for this, I was a very happy mog user, mog will be dead soon, it is what it is.

I've been a patient beats user and beats has gotten better in my view, the release of the iPad app sealed the deal for me, I love the 320 bit streaming, the ability to download via the web and make your music available off line.

This should take the Beats music service to a new level and greatly increase their library which is already pretty damn good.

I am listening to CNBC this morning, and there is a lot of discussion on other options. Cramer was talking about the possibility of Apple buying Harman and Pandora, to really own the entertainment and streaming space, especially in the car. Pure speculation on his part, no indication that is part of Apple's strategy, but Apple has not made any dramatic moves or created any new products since the Ipad.

There was also a mention of a music service, Lala, not sure of spelling, that Apple bought in 2009 for $400,000,000 and promptly shut it down as it was viewed as a potential Itunes alternative. A side note was praise for Harman's products and diss of Bose.

Best strategy for Apple is hire a good Medium to channel Steve Jobs Ghost and see what he would do.

Beats first, Sonos next?

Having broken the ice, Apple now must embrace its newly discovered and more realistic identity as a higher end consumer electronics company and continue to move aggressively to extend complementary offerings.

It has the absurd piles of cash to do it, spending a mere 2% of its hoard to purchase Beats. So spend more, Tim Cook, and feast on great brands with complementary hardware. Sonos would probably make a great next move.

Great. I liked MOG, planned on trying Beats, and now looks like it'll be gone by the Apple wayside. I really liked Sonos, it'll be a shame to see it get swallowed up, too. I guess I might as well just embrace the inevitable and start buying Apple TVs.
