AR XA IN UK OK.....

Sorry about the thread title
After seeing the AR XA s on here and elsewhere I realised that I needed one!
These appear to be quite rare here in Britain but I managed to find someone who had this:




I got the package delivered today and now I have to work out where it all goes!

One thing that does get me scratching my head is this:

What the ... is it?

It is obviously for the motor but I have not seen this on any AR build or restoration threads before. Part of it looks like a potentiometer or something??
Being an AC motor all I could imagine it doing would be reducing voltage but not frequency.....

I have a long way to go but would really like to get some power on just to see it moving!

Hi joff, your AR XA turntable is an universal model , I have the same turntable and that thing is a voltage selector (120 volt-220 volt).

I forgot in your pictures doesn't show the bottom lid . In this lid should have the label of the turntable. In this label show of specifications of it and show the universal model.

yep, voltage selector switch, and its current position is set for 220-240

it will spin at wall frequency.......250rpm in your case. You have the correct pulley from what I can see.

I plan to strip and repaint the top plate but would like to get it working first and refinish the cosmetics after I have listened to it for a while.
The arm will need some work and I am missing the ball for the tonearm well.

Marc, yes the motor has 4 wires all unhooked from this voltage selector. Any idea where they go?
I have on the motor white with green and white with red. then there is the black and yellow wires and the switch....?

It looks like you have a replacement arm tube installed because that is not the stock headshell. Make sure the fit into the arm pivot is secure and tight.

I think I see the arm cue mechanism that came with XAU units in the UK amongst the bits. If you can get that working it will be very helpful for operation.

Yes your right. This is an AR XA Universal as it states on the sticker. I cannot find out what order to wire the motor to the voltage selector though.

Pay close attention to which white wire goes where. they aren't interchangeable.
