Are these the best speakers ever made?

Onkyo Grand Scepter. Supposedly the most time coherent, distortion-free speakers ever made. Lofty aspirations. Has anyone seen or heard a pair? I sure haven't. Amazing looking speaker, is it not?

They weigh 177kg apiece. Completely horn-loaded. It appears as if the woofers, in addition to being horn-loaded, also have giant phase plugs. Meant to be paired with one of Onkyo's incredible power amps(like the M-509, which I own).

Any input would be appreciated.

I've not heard every speaker model so I won't proclaim any speaker "the best ever made." That said, the Onkyo is powerful good......I've never owned a pair or known anyone who did but I did see a pair on demo at a show some years ago and they did not disappoint.
 
There are alot of world-class loudspeakers out there past and present and it would take a long time to listen to them all and proclaim one the best. All one can tell from the picture of the Onkyo's is that they're big as all heck. Besides, Onkyo is known for it's electronics, not speakers. Why would you think those speakers are "the best speakers ever made"?
 
There was a bar on Okinawa that featured a pair of Scepter Tens by Onkyo.
They were my dream speakers for many years. Never did see a pair again.

Actually, Onkyo is quite well-known for their speakers in other parts of the world. Just not over here

I have no personal knowledge of these speakers' capabilities. I'm simply repeating what Onkyo stated in their advertising. I think it's foolhardy in the extreme to proclaim any speaker to be "the best ever made". However, marketing hype being what it is, there are many manufacturers that have made similar claims.

That being said, if they sound as impressive as they look, they are sure to be superb reproducers. Interestingly, the entire woofer horn assembly, including phase plugs can be removed as a single piece, leaving the exposed woofers and enclosure. The complete top high frequency horn assembly is also modular and can be taken off easily. In fact, the horn enclosure appears to be sitting on the woofer enclosure with perhaps just a few screws to secure it.

From what I understand, the crossover is contained in the top piece.

Have a look at Yahoo Japan.
I think one of my friend was bidding on a set of Onkyo Scepter earlier this summer.
He did not even came close.
The shipping would have been another story.

He has his sight set on a different set now.
I will look up his email and let you guys know.:music:
 
Never actually seen/heard an Onkyo speaker.
Those phase plugged midwoofers remind me of Limmer products.

I had thought the Tannoy high end models garnered the distinction of being the best speakers made? Gold series I think?

I must admit those Onkyo's are very impressince just to look at!

Best (oxymoronically enough) is a relative term. Those Onkyos may the best large room speakers, but they clearly are not the best tiny NYC apartment speakers, or the best car speakers. That said, why hold Onkyo to a standard of honesty that is adhered to nowhere else in the known advertising universe?

"Best ever"? I can't agree with the term...

"Best" can only be relative to the price asked. If these would cost an arm and a leg then it wouldn't worth the effort. is it? You would better off buy an orchestra to play in your living room.
