Are these worth the money?

First off, welcome to AK.

Second, the Kenwood receiver and AR speakers are great but I'm far too Scottish to pay that much for them, now if they were to go for say $150 - $200 tops, I'd say OK.

Third, As for the Klipsch, I'm not familiar with the Kg2s but I'd try to get the price in the $75 - $80 range.

Fourth, I'm not a fan of that era Sony gear at all. I would walk away from it myself.

Fifth item, and I'm sure the Mods will let you know pretty soon, threads asking the value of something or with links to EBay or CL or Kijiiji should be posted in the Dollars And Sense forum, just FYI.

I do not know about the price - but the kenwood add seems cool - original owner - original box - could be nice.

The kenwood and AR looks great but wayyyyy too much for them. Sony, I would walk and the Klipsch, I have no clue.

Thanks!

I am going to see if I can get the kenwoods for a more reasonable price.

and I will try and become more organized with my posts.

One thing you might want to consider is what you're buying too.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the ARs and Klipsch are two very different sounding speakers based upon my experience with other models in those lines.

But you can always resell them if you don't like them and don't mind the work.

I'd probably go with the Klipsch and try to find a receiver to drive them. The ARs could/usually have issues with corroded pots on the tweeters, so use that as a bargaining chip if you audition them and there's no or erratic high end output on them.

Hrmm I don't know how low you can go, but really I think $200 is more than a fair price for them. Taking $125 off might be a bit rude for the owner. But, it really depends.

The Kenwood is way too early a unit to take serious notice of, regardless of price. The AR speakers are nice, but if he's asking that much for the combo, he's not going to come down enough to make it worthwhile.

I am willing to bet the stuff in Ruckersville is from an AK member. If his name is Mike, he's a stand up guy and will most likely deal with another AK member.
That's if you want the stuff.
Welcome to AK. It's tough finding good deals on CL around your area....maybe Richmond is your best bet. DC area has lots of gear, but they ask more than it's worth most of the time, I see the same items posted month after month.
You know who you are :smoke:

Re: the Sony. I don't know of any consumer piece that used a ribbon cable and was any good at all. The Kenwood is high. If the Klipsch are still there in a couple days you might try offering $75.

Another happy customer of Mike in Ruckersville (if this is his ad, it looks like his). Nice guy, and honest, but it pays to do your homework before committing- he doesn't claim to be an expert on this stuff, just an enthusiastic listener.

If you do go to see Mike, say Hi to his very cool pooch (Ricky? Something like that).

His name isn't mike and he said he would keep my offer in mind, $150, if nothing else came up. Although it does seem like people here aren't entirely sold on this set.

I have been looking at stuff in Richmond but honestly it is to overwhelming. A lot of stuff is posted, most of which I know nothing about. I would have to be pretty sure about what I was buying before making the trip and I feel like anything that is a sure bet will probably be sold before I realize it is a great deal. Maybe I am wrong.

Take your time with it. When I first started out I didn't know anything, but I had an idea which still applies today that any Japanese made equipment under $100 was worth looking into and gathering information. Now, that almost a year has passed I've learned a lot from AK, and can spot a deal when I see one. It takes time to learn and go through the process of researching, listening, buying and selling off the stuff you've replaced. Now, I have friends and family that will either buy my previously loved items or let me sell off their previously loved items.

A couple months ago my local thrift sold those Klipsch for $50.
I missed them, or I would have picked them up.

Sony TA-285, 295, 301, and another I can't remember (325? 385?)

Re: the Sony. I don't know of any consumer piece that used a ribbon cable and was any good at all. .....

These were the integrated amp portions of rack systems crippled by that same ribbon cable scenario and sliding pots (part of a cheaply implemented graphic equalizer that the amp used in lieu of tone controls). Yuch. Having said that, the amps put out more than adequate power, and sound really, really good; as in uncolored, having a low noise floor and able to deliver a lot of 'slam' in the bass registers. They're also easy to work on. If you are going to listen to more than a phonograph, a cd player, and 2nd line level input, you'll need to add a switchbox. But I wouldn't discourage folks from trying one of these out as a great first system, or for a bedroom or garage system. Rated for 8 ohm speakers.

Regarding the Sony in the 3rd CL ad, for how little the seller is asking, it could be fun to play with.

Hold out for better. Best advice I've heard here was to check the completed sales at Ebay regarding the value of gear. Good kuck with your search and welcome to AK. Bob

Both people have offered me lower prices. The Klipsch for $75 and the other seller is offering me just the AR speakers, without receiver, for $150. Any thoughts?

The AR's are a very good vintage speaker and prolly worth the buck and a half if they are in good shape. Look 'em over good, make sure all the edges are sharp, if you find any defects at all try to deal. I'm thinking if he needs to sell them you can get him down a little more with a flash of cash. Obviously no one is lining up to get them.
I've never owned a pair but have heard them. Kinda wish I didn't pass on the last pair I looked at but have too many speakers as it is. You can do a whole lot worse for the money, and lucky to do any better. IMO :scratch2:
