Are these worth the money?

besides dents in the case should I look for anything else? Should I and will I be able to take the grills off to check for rot or mold?

Pardon me if this post appears twice. I just about finished it when I hit the wrong key and lost everything. Anyway, I think I lost it. However it may have already posted. I am using my wife's laptop and I am not familiar with the keyboard.

As far as checking the speakers, I would ask the seller if he could hook them up so you could listen to them with one of your favorite cd's, lp's, cassettes, or whatever. I am pretty sure you can remove the grilles, but they may be fragile due to age and pretty well stuck in place for the same reason. Let the seller remove them. Once off, check the foam ring around the woofers for signs of disintegration. Replacing the surrounds requires a kit that costs $20 or more assuming you want to do the work. Of course, the cost goes up if you would like an experienced tech to do the work. There are informative articles including pictures available on the net. Just google AR2a or AR3a and browse around. A good source of information for the value of equipment has been stated already, but bears repeating -- do a completed transaction search on ebay's search engine for the particular piece you are interested in. The search will give you very helpful info on what the item sold for recently, and sometimes just as important, what items did not sell. You could join AudiogoN.com and pay their fee for access to their data on average prices of equipment sold at their site. Also, you could visit Orion.com and pay to use their audio blue book online for data on used stereo equipment values. A site that has a wealth of information about tuners is tunerinfo.com. It also has some info on receivers, as well as how to modify tuners for improved performance. As far as picking up information on old stereo equipment, AK is a great place to start. I always check the Dollars and Sense thread. Another interesting site with plenty of links to other sources of information is classic-audio.com. It started as a Marantz reference source, but now has a lot of info on other brands. Roger Russell's McIntosh History page is also very informative, but not on current prices, just the history of McIntosh plus a complete listing all Mac equipment, their specs, and last retail selling price. Good luck with the speakers.
