ARXA Restoration, where to start?

Managed to get a technics sld3 tonearm online to swap out the wand and headshell,! Faceplate stripped and ready for priming. Probably will have to wait until the week-end to start painting though.

Marcmorin and AvFan did magic on this table and sounds better than any table I have owned and I have owned many good tables , I highly recommended getting your table done by Marc and if AvFan is still doing plinths then he’s highly recommended as well . Here’s a few pictures of mine .

Bucket o' clean parts :D

Got some great details on polishing the spindle ball end (thanks Marc!!). So that's on the list once I find the one micron paper.

Started to prime the faceplate today. Going to go with a piano black finish (yes I know it's going to show all the dust but that's just the price of beauty :naughty:)

Not many models of classic turn table in piano black left.

The Sansui SR-838 looks pretty good in piano black too.

Got the top plate painted. Technics tonearm arrived and got some wire. Also picked up some walnut and birdseye maple today. I'm thinking the maple may be a nice contrast with black top plate.

Polished the bearing today. Easy peasy thanks to Marc Morin's great instructions!

Pics are ball end of bearing before/after. And the shaft with crosshatch.

If Marc is following: I'd be appalled to put this nicely polished bearing back on those old thrust plates! Please PM/email me if I can get some replacements from you; or even some guidance on what to look for if I have to source locally. Thanks!

Just rattle can rustoleum. To be honest, I much prefer krylon but no one seems to stock it around here any more. The finish is all about the wet sanding and polishing.

Anyone know what the effective mass of the tonearm becomes after the technics mod? Based on the sl-d3 specs I am guessing around 12ish?

I think 12 ish is a good number. I just changed the collar not the entire wand. But that collar is heavier by a few grams than the AR one, I think that is where the added weight
comes from.

12ish is probably correct via checking cart resonate frequency on a test album. a heavier C/W after modification will move the C/W closer to the pivots. C/W location(distance) to the pivot is part of the formula for effective mass. more importantly, its affects on dynamic mass (body in motion) The closer you can get the C/W to the pivots, the more lithe the arm will be.

not only does Marc teach us about Ar's we learn new words too! had to look that one up !!

lithe | līT͟H | (also lithesome) adjective (especially of a person's body) thin, supple, and graceful.

DERIVATIVES lithely | ˈlīT͟Hlē | adverb litheness | ˈlīT͟Hnəs | noun

ORIGIN Old English līthe‘gentle, meek’ also ‘mellow’, of Germanic origin; related to German lind ‘soft, gentle’.

Sorry for dropping off for so long, life got pretty busy and the ARXA got shelved for a while. I finally got around to finishing it (except the cover) so thought I would share the final product. I have a shure sps-5 cart on there right now which came with it originally and it sounds pretty darn good to my ears. I'm pretty pleased with how this came out. arxa1.jpg arxa2.jpg

I should also say thank you to everyone that helped me out with this project. This was another level of restoration for me and I learned alot! Special shout out to Marc Morin for sharing his incredible knowledge as the resident AR guru:bowdown:
