The hand truck is a mechanical device mounted on a large trailer, containing a large electric motor that rotates a drum on which rubber paddles are mounted at slightly irregular intervals. When the drum is rotated the paddles strike (or slap) a hollow vinyl-covered bar, producing a sound similar to that of people clapping their hands. The hand truck was used when movie or TV producers wanted to simulate the applause of a large audience, without the expense of actually hiring a crowd of extras. It is no longer in general use, being replaced by CDs, but still sometimes employed by filmmakers seeking a 'vintage' sound from an analog source.
