Asking about Quality Turntable for first user

I'll echo what others have said, get the SL-D1 and spend the additional budget on speakers. They're very simple machines and they will run forever with a bit of love. I've got two SL-D2s (same as the D1 but they're semi-automatic), one was $50CAD + a new Grado Black cart and the other $80CAD + a new N95ED stylus. Both were under $100 USD all-in. Both sound better than my brand new Pro-Ject Elemental + Ortofon OM5E.

I heavily agree, get the SL-D1 and be done with it. Very reliable, very well made, takes standard SME type headshells, and performs very well. Not fussy. An ideal first turntable, for many all they need or want for a turntable. The SL-D2 was in fact my first Technics. This choice would also allow you more leeway on speakers. MickMcGeough's last post is sensible and his advice solid here. You'd be hard pressed to do better for a start.

The Thorens is probably your best bet, I would buy a fully working one at that price any day. You can use those for the rest of your life, and they have good resale value. Check out Vinyl Nirvana if you want to see what can be done with them.

If you're in the US, parts for the Rotel will probably be a lot harder to track down as well.
