AT-LP120 and Technics Sl-1200 MK2

Lets just agree to disagree. I clearly laid out the parameters, what the purpose is, over and over, clearly and distinctly. If you choose to think differently and still think I am biased even when I gave the technics kudos in build, anti skate and platter, then I will not be able to convince you regardless of what I say.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one...

Okay, we disagree.

What, if anything, did you do to assess the condition of the 1200?

What, if anything, did you do in the way of service or repair prior to this test?

John

But, you know what? I think one of the telling things of this comparison is that a used, heck even heavily used, 1200 will still have a significant degree of the original performance specs without even breathing hard. Unless of course it has been damaged. That's the beauty of high grade engineering and construction...it lasts.

However to compare apples to apples we really should be dealing with "new" products.

Which this one appears to be.

John

My point is turntables to do it right can't be done on a shoe string budget with a $200 turntable. I bet half the new AK members first and only turntable is collecting dust within six months after they realize with their ears it was a big disappointment and not the sonic pie in the sky they read about. The other factor was reality hit their pocket book when they found about having to clean records etc. They will go back to the simplicity and economy of digital. This is doing nothing but spreading false hopes of performance/value that doesn't exsist, you got to pay to play.

You should start a poll

Because many of the folks I read on AK still have their first table...whether they bought it 30 years ago or bought a legacy table..

I sometimes think I am being personally insulted - like folks don't think I know what I am hearing. I have listed tables I have owned, worked on , played, own now, etc. I have been in music in so many ways including being in a rock band...I think I have enough bona fides to say this is a solid table and because of its style and function, a good alternative to the technics.

I go out of my way spend money and spend time to do a fair, blow by blow comparison and what do I get ? Grief..

I could have a brand new technics and a brand new AT and someone would say "You didn't setup the technics right".

In my book, these are excuses. How about the naysayers buy each new and do the tests according to MY specs ...lets see how you patience lasts.

Why can't you guys with 1200s just sit back and let a comparison be made? Jeez. If your table is as awesome as you say, there should be no problem whatsoever revealed in a comparison.

Appears to be what ?

Which this one appears to be.

Damaged ? And what magic hat with a rabbit did you pull that pearl from ? Pictures ? I told you it was mechanically pristine but again, my word is not good enough.

Tell you what - I will take may tables apart piece by piece and have them inspected, every single piece in the manual - when you do the same with yours and show it in 200 pieces..fair enough ? Sheesh..

I am about a post away from say - forget it..gone

Yes. They are still undervalued.

You got specs. Got ears?

Speaking of got ears....I'm curious in this comparison. I've heard both tables at different times and preferred the 1200 but I'd be curious what anybody else has to add. Its a simple comparison. No puppies or kittens get hurt in the attempt.

I just love how the Technics fanboys claim it will trounce anything around its price and basically anything at ANY price, yet they're crying like babies and shivering like cold bunny rabbits at the thought of it being compared to a $200 AT clone. If its what you say it is...everything will be fine! Chill out.

What are you talking about? :sigh:

Read that post again. Montycat referred to a "heavily used" 1200. Hell, I even bolded it in my reply. I said your table appeared to fit that bill. Nowhere did I or anyone else suggest it was damaged.

Yes, you did say it was "mechanically pristine" but you never said how you determined that, even when asked repeatedly.

Maybe you should take you're own advice next time a Traveler thread comes along ;)

Not worried here. I had a 1200 and it has gone by by. I am looking forward to the comparison, and even some raw data. I am not a 1200 fanboy and I think the AT is probably pretty decent. Kudos to Rob for sticking to his plan. :thmbsp:

What for me would be a nice thing to have is endurance tested results. In other words test 2 new tables (or better yet several of each), use them equally for years and then test them again. That would be an example of the scientific method.

I know that Rob is not going to do that, and who could expect that of him? It's still fun to watch.

I admit the Sl 1200 fandom is more intense than I originally thought. As I catch up to more and more threads since my several-year hiatus you can time a Technics recommendation to clockwork.

On topic, I think there is a lengthy thread at Audiocircle from a couple years ago where someone found the AT to be very decent compared to the 1200 once some minor mods were done...

I for one am enjoying the comparison, and while the AT is a blatant copy of the sl 1200 it may all the table some people/need or want. as for me I am one of those guys who will restore an old table and they are still out there.

I think the point of the excersize for the OP was to display the audible differences and not necessarily superiority. If one wants to spend more than ca $200 the choices open up rapidly beyond just the '1200 anyway, I'd be looking for a Yammy PX-2 if I was going to spend north of $500 on a DD for instance and there are all those yummy 'better-end' DDs from Denon, JVC, Sansui, Sony, ect, ect for the same or less than the prices some of the 1200s are getting.
Mebbe it's just a new-in-the-box ca $200 DD we might be able to swing, whad'ja think? Mebbe that, playing some toonz off vinyl, sleeping indoors, eating regularly, you know, the usual life choices.
