AT50MC

Hello there!

I just pulled a 50mc from a cabinet in my parents house. It has a dead channel (tested with multimeter) but with these wouldn’t a new stylus also fix a dead channel because it’s all in the stylus anyway?

That leads me to a follow up, am I correct that if I get a ATN30/31E it won’t work well with my Marantz 2325 and I’d need a new separate phono stage?

Problem is typically a coil which isn’t in the cartridge body on these, so the OP is correct.

Most likely yes, but if you have a multimeter at hand, you could always check, whether the wiring from the needle contacts of the body to the output pins is still ok.

Yes, with an ATN31E or ATN30E you'd indeed either need an MC step-up transformer or an MC pre-pre-amp, to be used in combination with the MM phono section of your Marantz, or an external, MC-capable phono stage solution (be it an MC-capable phono stage or an MM phono stage together with a step-up transformer or MC pre-pre-amp), to be used in combination with one of the line-level inputs (Aux or Tape 1/2 In) of your Marantz. However, if you're lucky, you might as well still be able to dig up an ATN30HE, which is the high-output variant of the ATN30E and can be used with an MM input.

Greetings from Munich!

Ok, I’ll look up how to check those pins since I have the meter handy, though it seems like the costs associated with finding the rare HE or getting equipment to make the also expensive E versions won’t make this worth it for me. Seems like the money would go better into my MM Shure 93E fancy stylus options or just getting a different cart altogether.
