Do you know of any modern cartridges that would work with this tonearm or am I going to be looking for something used.

I would consider one of the heavier tracking Denons, eg, the 103 line if you have moving coil capability. As for Moving Magnet/Iron some of the Shure DJ cartridges M44-7, SC35C might be good matches and reasonably priced. If you could find a new Stanton 500/680 or Grado DJ 100 or 200 cartridge they might work nicely with that arm. Just some ideas off the top of my head. Others here might have some suggestions for you as well.
Thanks for the help, am I looking for a P-mount or 1/2" for this tonearm. I'm fairly unfamiliar with it.

If you use P-Mount you will need to make sure you have the 1/2 inch adapter. I do not know if there are any p-mounts that would necessarily be appropriate with that arm unless Ortofon has something in their DJ series. Probably best to stick with regular 1/2". You might want to try the inexpensive SC35C there are other styli you could swap as well on that one, for example if you wanted to play 78's.
I don't think I will be playing all that many 78's on this set up, how would I know if I have the capability to use a moving coil cartridge?
The amplifier is a Rotel RX-454 that has a phono pre amp built in and I'm looking for a set of bookshelf speakers to finish it off.

Looked up your receiver and it looks like you only have a moving magnet input so a moving coil would be out unless you also invested in a step up transformers or an external Phono stage with moving coil capability. I would recommend the Shure SC35C, Stanton 500 or 600 series cartridges as ones you should be able to find new since you indicated you would like to try a new cartridge. Stanton has ceased making cartridges but believe they can still be found new if you look around. The Shure is still the least expensive option and would be a good way to try out your arm without spending a lot of $.

The 412-1 has the same stepped platter as the 412-2. It just doesn't have the sort of wonky mechanical mechanism to move the belt between steps.
"Borg Death Cube" motor. Definitely a later model, probably labeled as a 412-1A.

I do not believe this is correct based on the 412-2s I've owned.
Have you verified that the TT will run at 45 RPM using the method you describe?
I'll fire one up to check it, but the platters look the same from the pictures I've seen.

AFAIK platters are the same for all 412s, but the 412-2 has either a different underside transfer pulley, motor pulley, or both. Finding good pictures of the speed change mechanism is difficult.
Think so, did the 412 ever have that pull-up 45 adaptor?
