Today just received the AU-20000 that purchased 6 weeks ago. When opened up the carton, was very sad & disappointed to see the speaker selector switch & the left side "handle" were broken, both dropped into pieces inside the carton. The chassis & both side covers were bent. The only good thing is all PCB are still in tact, no cracks / broken. The carton was so thin and lack of protective foams & cushions. The seller basically did not consider the weight of this unit when doing the packing, really feel very bad...At last managed to flatten the chassis & side covers, whole units seems quite OK. Here need some help...
1). Where is the voltage selector switch located ? or how to set the voltage input to 230V (just cannot find the switch...)
2). Where can buy the speaker selector switch ?

great find there... too bad the shipping was such a bad experience... people must be used to the black plastic crap that doesn't weigh anything and they think nothing of putting the vintage heavy stereo equipment into similar packaging...
 
Sorry to hear about the damage in shipment. I've been down that road too. AU 20000 is around 50lbs and has to be packed well. Just a suggestion for the future, I give detailed instructions about packing to the seller if there is any question and pay extra. The photo gives you an example of the way it should be packed. You can't even trust UPS stores sometimes. They packaged two 50 lb speakers only in styrofoam peanuts resulting in damage. Hope damage is minimal.

Regarding speaker selector switch, unless someone on AK has a parts unit. I have seen a few AU 20000 inop on ebay but they go for a pretty good price. You can put a want ad on the Classified forum. I don't know but the speaker selector switch on a AU 9900 or 11000 might work.

In fact before the seller ship out the unit, I did inform him to use strong carton with foams to prevent the unit from getting damage, but end up only a soft & thin carton was used, basically did not take into consideration the weight of the unit & the handling process by forwarders. Same experience encountered when received SR-929, cabinet & dust cover were cracked due to poor packaging.......
 
Maybe this could help you for changing the voltage input.



This is from manual of the AU-919. Maybe you can use it similar to your AU 20000?

Yes, sometimes even talking to the seller doesn't work. Personally I'd send him pics of the damage and expect him to make some adjustments on money paid to him. Yes this is the chance we all take on epay. Did the guy double box it? Sometimes it is helpful to send him detailed instructions.

Sorry it didn't workout for you. I've also had a turntable damaged to poor packing.

Good info, Sascha, I'm wondering if it helped FX66? Why would it be set on 230V? Mine has never been off 110, and wouldn't know how to change it, but always thought it was under the spec plate like Stene & the others say.
Seller needs a good whacking. :twak:

I guess FX66 is located outside US. Singapore maybe

It's normal that the voltage selector is hidden behind the plate where the different voltages used to be printed. I checked the service manual for AU-20000 and this is what I found.

Yes, like Stene mentioned, the AU-20000 was shipped from US to Singapore. Tested out using step down transformer, the unit powered up, works fine with headphone (seems ok), yet to try out with speakers connected.... Got the voltage conversion diagram from Stene (also from Sascha), really appreciate for thier help and others as well...Will try the conversion later-on..

Converted the voltage setting from 120V to 240V. Both the broken handle & speaker selector switch were joint back, and work perfectly fine. Fixed back the unit & did some polishing, now it looks new....Connected Altec Lansing to the speaker terminals, switched on the power switch, the sound produced from the speaker is clear. All switches / functions are working perfectly. To me this amp. is very nice. But just point to mention, it does not equip with LOUDNESS control. If have, will be much better (just my opinion...)
One "issue" need advise. When the power is on, the PROTECTOR light will be on, and after about 4 - 5 seconds, it goes off. Is this normal ??

Loudness circuits are evil...the lack of them shows a seriousness on the part of the original project engineer to build a TOTL piece of gear.

The protection does take a few seconds to engage. Sounds like yours is working fine.

Glad she's up and running for you after taking such a beating... "built like a tank".

My power level meters always jump when the unit is turned on/off. Does yours do this, and is this normal, Echo Wars? My BA-2000's don't do that.

Mine also same, both meters will "jump" for about 2 seconds when unit is on/off. This should be normal, as there is a surge current during power on/off. Used to have another brand of amplifier with meters, same behaviour observed.
Noticed that there is no "great impact" to the sound when activated both low & high filters switches, also when the unit is on while nothing is connected to the rear panel, both meters read about -35db when 0db input switch is depressed. Is this due to grounding, or some issues with the unit? (no reading when 40db input switch is activated). Thanks

Don't remember exact dB cut filter activation has (10?); definitely audible, yet subtle to the ears and dependent on the music.

There is also a definite impact to the sound when the Tone & Filter section is engaged (noticeable when the selector switch is moved from Defeat position). This is evident throughout the Professional/Definition Series in my experience, including my brand new CA-2000 in '77.

Never operated mine without something connected, but this doesn't sound right. I remember reading that it is not good to operate without speakers connected.

There are others here with this amp, maybe they will weigh in.
 
Hi, like to post some pictures of this nice gear. Finally, both broken speaker selector switch & dislodged left "handle" were successfully fixed back. Generally the whole unit still in good shape. There are some bends / dented marks at the bottom side of side covers. Meters read about -39db when "0db input switch" is on. This happens when Input Selector switched to Phono 1. Phono 2 is ok (???).

FX, sorry for the delayed response. Your amp really took a beating, glad you were able to get it going again.

I don't use my AU-20000 very much and being disabled requires assistance.

This is what I found:
0dB meter selector button setting = a very sensitive measurement of input signal. My AU-20000 meters also have a small reading with the Phono 1 button pushed in. Phono 2 does not, because it is not as sensitive. I suspect we need to use RCA jack shorting plugs, as in this thread: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78579

Be sure the unit is grounded; both to the house, and other units connected to it.

Also, read about polarized AC cord: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7802&highlight=Polarized

Filters provide a -3dB cut, very noticeable at the 7kHz high, and 20Hz low filter settings. If not, the Tone & Filter Selector Switch may be dirty, working it may help, but cleaning may be necessary. There are threads here that explain how to clean switches, but I take mine to a technician.
