Audio components prefix: RX and SX

Well the SX is easy enough to figure out, it refers to sex. No doubt it sold lots of gear for Pioneer.

I always considered the X meaning 'cross', 'crossed', 'crossover'
RX and SX were tuner and amplifier crosses.

The X is also used here:
Transformer- TX/former
Crystal- Xtal
X'ing- crossing
X'mas- Christ/Cross mas

In radio communication RX is commonly used for receive with TX used for transmit.

Yep, that's how I always understood it to be. Always seemed pretty straightforward anyway, don't think there's any hidden meaning behind them as they are fairly common and widely accepted acronyms that accurately describe the device.

S for stereo
X for combination amp, preamp and tuner (crosses over all three functions)
A for amplifier
R for radio receiver (certain brands)
