I've had friends buy this table. Great introduction to the basics of turntable setup and operation. Good cartridge comes with it stock. Doesn't lose that much ground in sound to my NAD or my Technics SL-D2.

tygr as you quoted ZZ Top "hi-fi, lo-fi, no-fi is just fine with me" if your not demanding/fussy the AT LP-120 will work for you. Arcorobs assessment pretty much tells the story, good table for the money, it's not a Technics SL-1200Mk2 but then again it's 1/3 the cost. Consider the 1/3 the cost is probably based on a like new/minty Technics SL-1200Mk2 for $600, good/excellent condition Technics SL-1200Mk2 can be purchased in the $300-$500 range. If your system, receiver/speakers, is low-fi to mid-fi the LP-120 will be a good fit, if the system is mid-fi to hi-fi the Technics would be a better match.

I actually run a 1200 mkII but wanted to try something new and shiny. I figured it may be good enough for a backup or another system someday.

tygr..legacy tables

Well, if you are not adverse to legacy tables, you can do better for the same $235. Don't get me wrong, I like mine..but even I have replaced mine with a legacy table and relegated the AT to a garage table..LOL

I see the strength of the ATLP120 as a "first time, new user, short budget" table that offers a lot of bang for the buck. A more experienced TT'est (and an SL1200 owner) might not be the target audience.

Nice table for the money if you're not a stuffy TT aficionado and don't care to debate things like "table" vs "cartridge"; which really gives you the best upgrade in sound? There are some who say, get a decent table like this and just put in a really NICE cartridge and if you're not snotty you should have something that meets all but the most demanding tastes--YOU know WHO you are!

A bit higher on the food chain at $400, the Audio Technica AT-LP-1240?

But then again, I'm a cheap dude and a born skeptic. 100 pound platters with motors that can mow my lawn that are in the next room so that they don't introduce and "vibration" to the 100 pound platter! lol

And now, I wait for my tomatoes peacefully. Don't throw them too hard! I told you so! Tables determine the sound? OK.

The AT LP-120 fits a niche/price point/performance level where a really nice cartridge isn't going to contribute to a maximum return in performance, the money spent on a really nice cartridge would be better spent on a more capable turntable.

Hello majick47, I'm very curious with this statement/comment. Sorry, i'm new here and i don't mean anything. I hope you don't mind.

I'm just very curious, since i'm on the lookout for a new turntable setup when i get back to my second home (Iran). I'm torned between ATLP120, Debut Carbon, Debut IIIE, Debut Carbon Esprit and Denon DP-300F. But the ATLP120 is number 1 on my list.

Here is why..

ATLP120 - I can get/source this turntable in Tehran possibly than the other turntables that i mentioned. This is imho almost Mk2 1200 from the looks of it and the quality might be. I've had 1200's before so it's one of the reason it's on the top of my list. It has phono preamp which i need for my powered speakers. I just wanted a simple setup right now. The cheaper from the lot.
It's 279EU (+ - vat) from the dealer i've been contacting on Germany. If the distro in Tehran have this available it would be great. So i won't be needing to pay on shipping and taxes.. Hassle free! I plan on getting extra cart for this turntable if ever that's why i'm very curious with your comment.

Pro-Ject Debut III E with OM5E 323 EU (+ - vat) - I've been wanting this turntable for years but too many prioritise i didn't able to get it and the reviews with the Debut III are a bit mixed up.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with OM10 299 EU (+ - vat) - This looks promising. The problem is i don't have enough info about the cart. Is it as good as the AT95E cart that is included with the ATLP120?

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit with 2M Red 392 EU (+ - vat) - I like this one but i have to stretch my budget to get it + a preamp is needed for the Pro-Ject Turntables on my list. Although i can buy a cheap Pyle Phono Preamp where i'm right now (Manila) for $30. A bit over for my budget. Should i just save up?

Denon DP-300F - This looks nice as well. Fully Automatic (but not a fan). I'm not sure about the cart included with the turntable so this is the last on my list.

A little background. :) I've been staying in Iran for 2 years now. I had a simple setup before going there. A vintage Floorstander Kef, A few turntables.. From simple Garrard, Luxman to Goldring and 1200's. I sold them before migrating there with my family. I end up with hundreds of records that i can't bring to Iran. Unfortunately, i have to bring a Numark PT01 just to play the records i brought and bought there. To my ears it's not enough. Two years past by, i realised i needed atleast a simple setup. Real table.. I have powered speakers that i could use for the moment. A turntable with built in phono is better for me so i don't need to stretch my budget.

If i end up getting the ATLP120 i could afford buying extra new cart like M447 or M9x7. If i end up with one of the Pro-Ject on my list i have to buy a Phono Preamp and no extra cart.. If i can wait i could buy the Esprit but that would take me a few more months to save up. Another thing with ATLP120, since it's possible to get it from the Tehran dealer it would save me more money and less hassle with taxes, post office etc..

What you guys think? I'm more into music than tweaking with setups so i'm OK with simple one. What i really want is a table that can play my records right to my ears. A new one..

Thank you very much AKers! I've learned more about turntables for the few days just reading here.

I'll offer what I think. I'd say when you get home pick up that AT LP120 and a suitable cartridge, like an AT95E and start spinning records without another thought on AK opinion. :)

Glad to hear that Bob! Thank you! I just need more convincing to get the ATLP120.. I hope i could get some leads from the distro in Tehran for pricing.

Another reason i like with the ATLP120 is i could save up more money so i could pay extra baggage kilos from my airlines to bring in more records! :music:

Oh...duh! I also have a nice 1219 Dual. Maybe I don't want the AT table.

Not the worst thought, imo. Instead, as you already have a good dd and a good idler, why not a belt drive for completeness? I'd suggest a classic, suspended model (AR, Thorens...).

Greetings from Munich!
