Autoformers vs. No Autoformers

Right now I have a Krell KAV-400xi driving a pair of B&W Matrix 805's. I am going to purchase a pair of Proac Response 1sc's soon, as I really don't like metal tweeters in general. I used to like them years ago but my tastes in music have changed and I like a more laid back sound now.

Other speakers I had considered were ATC SCM11 and Merlin TSM, but I've owned Proac speakers before and I love them.

Another reason I'm considering Mac over my Krell is because of the built-in safety features like ant-clipping(I'm not sure what it's called) and what I perceive to be a less analytical sound. I'm not sure if the latter is true, just basing that on reviews that I have read.

I appreciate the feedback.

You will like the Proac 1sc, I had a pair for about a year on a loan from a friend and really enjoyed them with the 275 tube amp as well as trying and liking them with the 501s briefly. :thmbsp:

I think they fit my style of music now, most of which is watching TV and DVD's in two channel. People underestimate what a great sound system can do for your average TV show or sporting event :D

I also watch a lot of concert DVD's, Pink Floyd, Diana Krall, Coldplay and of course The Eagles HFO.

If you cannot auditon before you buy I would go with a used unit because you will lose little if the purchase does not work for you. Your opinion is the only one that matters. :thmbsp:

Go with the auto-transformers.

If you can, go with a MA6600 as you can add a Tuner card and have a hell of an integrated with an HD tuner in it. It's a bargain $$$ wise.

Thanks everyone. Several people have recommended autoformers over DC models (I learned that the non-autoformer models are direct coupled).
I'll look into an MA6900.
Have you given any thought to going with a slightly older set-up? A C29 or newer preamp and an MC2105 or newer amp will set you back $1500-2500, depending on the exact model and condition. You can recap or have recapped for a few hundred more when the time is right. Wonderful sound.
