Bands from your own home town who made it big or didn't!

Lots of Music history from the DC area...

Roberta Flack
O.A.R. (popular with young folks nowadays)
Good Charlotte (not my cuppa)
Robert Gordon (great rockabilly)
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Chuck Brown (founder of DC's own go-go music genre)
DC also shares claim to Emmylou Harris and Bill Kirchen (guitarist, Commander Cody)

Equidistant to my house is Baltimore, home of:

Frank Zappa
David Byrne

I thought I'd mention the following compilation CD for anyone who might be interested in music coming out of the Boston area from a classic period in Boston area music history (1975-1983).

It's called:

DIY: Mass. Ave. - The Boston Scene (1975-1983)
Rhino 1993

You can get a good idea of where 'The Pixies' sound came from by listening to this CD although it's harder, more edgy and more indebted to punk than what the Pixies were doing.

'Last Chance' - bands name.

Chicago.
My brothers band. They sounded like Uriah Heap but they were only 15 years old so they couldn't play in bars. They were 'amazingly great'. They broke up before they turned 18. All were musicians since about 7-8 years old. This was back in 1969. They didn't make it, no one is presently in a good band. That's the way life tumbles sometimes. Brother used to play in a backup band for Journey.

Saunders King, one of the first bluesman to record on electric guitar. Formed a band in the 1930's and played in the SF bay area/ Oakland blues and R&B scene. Then toured nationaly. Got into trouble with the law and was sent to San Quentin. Carlos Santana married his daughter and then produced his album.

John Coltrain was born about 3/4 of a mile from my house. Did I spell that right? I need to go check the history marker.

Add to the Coltrane/NC connection Nina Simone and (brieftly) Thelonious Monk.

Chapel Hill, NC: Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Polvo. I'm from farther east in the state, but we got nobody.

There were two bands in this area back in the late 70s thru early 80s that should have made it big in my opinion. They played mostly soul/funk at Popsicle Toes here in Dallas.

Buster Brown
Phyrework

I got to meet Victor "Widetrack" Hill the others listed from the Buster Brown band at the Cantina Santa Fe in Corpus Christi around 77' or 78'. I found his driver's license & he stopped by store I was working at to pick it up. He was a tremendous bass player & Kelly the keyboard player sounded a lot like Stevie Wonder.

Also, I talked the lead singer, I think his name was Otis & another singer who is a the pastor of local church in this area. Wow, funny how life works.

I had a flat tire when I came out from the church with my young daughter & I remembered him from the band days. He got a deacon to take us by this station & picked up two new tires.

Awesome!

I'm from Orange County, California. The list is endless.

Especially if you add L.A. county which is less than a half hour away.

My brother in laws dad had the same first and last name as jazz bassist from the SF bay area and used to get his mail. When he took the mail to the bassist he always asked him to come and see him play at the nite club called the "Blackhawk" in SF. The bassist Vernon Alley played with everyone in jazz on tour and as a member of the house band from Charlie Parker. to Billie Holliday to Duke Ellington etc.

From Rockford Ill but they played Wisconsin ALL THE TIME in the early 70's: Cheap Trick.

Also from the Milwaukee area: The Bodeans and The Violent Femmes.

Cheap Trick my hometown boys...
Also...
Donnie Sundahl my best friend in grade school now in FL. Is out touring now very good check him out.
Miles Nielsen (Rick from Cheap Tricks Son) he also plays with Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons.
Dax Nielsen plays with his dads band and A Fine Frenzy
OFF Broadway had some hits

Akron, OH - Chrissie Hynde, James Ingram, Rachel Sweet, The Black Keys, Tim "Ripper" Owens

The Waitresses, Tin Huey, Chi Pig, Rubber City Rebels (along with Pere Ubu and the Electric Eels from Cleve.) deserve a mention as influential during our regions punk-new wave era. The mid to late '70's around here had a vibrant music scene.

Regionally The Michael Stanley Band never quite broke through - solid Midwest rock sound. The Numbers Band (15-60-75) and Hammer Damage were bands with rabid local following that I made a point to see live often.

you beat me to this one, I'm from Akron too.
I know that we're talking music but the film director Jim Jarmusch is from Akron as well.
