Bands from your own home town who made it big or didn't!

Good Grief!

Atlanta either sucks for musical talent or I have no memory left. It is quite possibly both.

Dennis Yost and The Classics IV (really formed in Jacksonville but moved to Atlanta)

who became

The Atlanta Rhythm Section - Yes, really from Doraville where the BOP plant was.

The Hampton Grease Band (ugh!)

I won't put in anything from Wikipedia that I have never heard of.

Please! Anyone know of others? (James Brown isn't from Atlanta. I don't know, or remember where Doug Clark was from.)

Deerhunter is from Atlanta but they probably fly under the radar for most people. They're on the Kranky label and fit loosely into the "shoegaze" genre. Oh and they're awesome and touring right now.

Erie, Pa. - Pat Monahan used to sing in the bars here before he left for California to form Train. "Made it Big"

The Stabilizers are another band from here that left for California and recorded one album. "Not So Big"

John Novello, the keyboard player in Niacin with Billy Sheehan, is also from here.

Natalie Merchant and 10000 Maniacs were the house band in a restaurant/bar my brother and I had. All us kids grew up together.

"3 Doors Down" from Escatawpa, Mississippi

I grew up with them. Me, Todd Harrell, and Chris Henderson went to elementary, junior high, and high school together. Brad Arnold and Matt Roberts went to a different school system a few miles away. Todd lived 2 houses down the road from me. Me and Todd have been friends since I was 8. Todd is 1 year older than me. I remember hearing them practice down at Todd's house till about 2 o'clock in the morning almost every night. It sounded like a live rock concert at his house. We spent all our time on the river: knee boarding, fishing, hunting. They're river rats, too.

Jimbo Mathus - Squirrel Nut Zippers is from my hometown, Corinth MS.

Mac MacAnally is from nearby Belmont MS.

Lived in Little Rock for 20 years and that is where Evanescence hails from.

My brother also told me he grew up Styx since they were all kids. :dunno: Like 'kid friends'. He just told me that - no reason to doubt it. Not something you would make up out of the blue.

My brother played lead guitar too. Learned guitar at 7 years old ~ took guitar lessons from some well-known Chicago musician but I can't remember who it was.
& my brother's girlfriend's father was 'close friends' with Jim Morrison. He met Jim when Jim came over to his girlfriend's parent's house in S. Chicago to visit. The Doors just finished their first album - that's all I know. My brother didn't think it was very much of a big deal. Just a new band lucky enough to cut an album is what he thought.

My brother played drums with a band called BigShot back in the day. They had some good songs but broke up years ago.
