Beautiful Pioneer Rack system (models and value)

As in everything, one really cannot make a complete total true assessment on just one picture alone, just a "guess-estimate" IMO.

But just from the picture itself tells me that is appears to be a complete, all original Pioneer rack system with all the goodies and well cared for at that.

Now with that being said when determining its value the other important questions are, 1.) Are all the pieces of audio components actually in good working condition? 2.) Are the heads to the reel to reel and the cassette deck in good condition? 3.) Everything works, no problems at all? 4.) Had any type of work, repairs, etc. ever been done on any of the audio pieces? These are just some of the questions that I would ask if I were interested in that sale. But again this is just me, everyone is different. To some details really don't matter, etc., etc., etc. But if all these questions can be answered truthfully and completely then that particular Pioneer Rack System should go for anywhere from $1500 to $2000 and up?

I don't know about anyone else but to me $1500 to $2000 is a good chunk of $$$$ to put down for a complete system, well its not really totally complete because its missing speakers but what the heck right? So I would definitely want to make sure that it is in very good operational condition as well as cosmetically. One must keep in mind that this is not a brand new out of the store audio system, its vintage from the late 70's to early 80's but yet a very, very desirable and sought after Rack System at that.

Again, just my $0.02, good luck! :D

Thank you R-2-R

Man, that's a nice rack!! (Somebody take the bait. Humor me.)

There must be some Pioneer forum guys popping a Viagra as they look at your posting.

I remember seeing a similar rack on epay. Here are 2 completed listings. Different components but a decent comparison point for the seller. Bundling/local pick up drags down the price. If you search in "Vinatage audio" using "Advanced search" and use the "Completed listings" serch using "Pioneer rack".You can find all the components and past pricing if it was parted out. Since the guy is selling the bundle and not parting out, the bundle price makes a reasonable and fair selling price. Unbundled price on just the rack hardware would be over $1K. I'm not a Pioneer buy necessarily but I have to say that Pioneer was the benchmark for styling in the silver era.

There are two Elite racks out ther as well that would look awesome.

I'll bet there are Viet Namese buyers or Chinese buyers that would pay $10K easy for this if you could market it and find a buyer. There are Chinese/Viet Namese forums out there but you would have to have a way to complete a safe transaction and ship it safely. If anyone thinks we should keep this in the good ol USA, read the label on the back. "Made in Japan".

I have no dog in this hunt. I'm not sellin nuthin.

I'll bite! That is an extremely nice rack! The headphones are nice too :D
Thank you for the comments and links!

Thanks to all that replied! I have made contact with the seller and heres whats there

PL 630 TT
RT 707 R2R
CTF 900 cass
TX9800 tuner
SQ 9500 EQ
SA 8800 integrad

Technics SB-L50 speakers :headscrat how did he end up with technics? seems HPM 100's would have been a better match for this system in that era.

Seller says new in 78' (paid 4000) original owner, have been stored for twenty years (yuk) Asking $1500.

I told him that my budget allowed for only around 1000 and he still is willing to let me come look so maybe 1200 max.

What do you think about these being stored for twenty years? I would rather have equipment that was in use. I dont want to buy a restoration project and certainly not for 1000 +

Although, as many have said the rack alone may be worth more than all the components! So, perhaps I'll go take a look! All in a weekends fun!

Thanks again and keep those comments coming!

What would be a fair offer for these pieces? The seller wants an offer and I don't want to offend or overpay. I haven't auditioned the pieces and only have the picture to go by so far.

This is your original post and now you are in a position (I think) to pick this up.
You now know how much he is ASKING. You have conveyed to him that you were thinking $1000 and he has invited to come by. If you are at the 'head of the line' it is basically now in your control. Nobody yet has indicated a value lower than you are thinking so you are in the neighbourhood of your original thoughts - 'fair' to possibly be some form of a score.
Convey your legitimate concerns about not wanting a $1000 project because of necessary repairs (every bit of a scratch sound when adjusting knobs could be your de-oxit friend along with a cosmetic scratch).
Don't get hung up on the speakers - consider them a freebie in this equation
On the surface, I just wish I was in your position - IMO

+1 :thmbsp: on the above post.

For something like this you really need to put a lot of thought and consideration into exactly 'why' you want to purchase this particular Pioneer Rack System? Are you going to buy it specifically as an "investment" to may be someday turn around and sell it? or are you buying it for personal enjoyment and entertainment reasons?....and above all, is it 'worth it' to you to purchase it?

Lastly, advice words/phrase that you should quickly take into consideration...."Think Long, Think Wrong"? :scratch2:

The rack and the rack handles are probably worth the $1000.00, the gear is free.

I didn't note this above before I posted my response, but yeah. I'm in total agreement with what he said....

This is a 2 grand setup. And that's a good deal. I put the 8800 at 400. The 9800 tuner at 200. The 630 at 300.

If you don't go for the $1500, it will be gone and you'll be sorry later.
