I kinda like the older Phono sections, they sound more mellow! More natural than what there is today. IMO.

ONKYO gear rocks . I just sold my tx-4500 mk2 to a friend. very warm sound with the tone controls very flat. Onkyo had some great phono stages in the 70's.

Iwas useing my "old" Onkyo TX-4500Mk2 a couple days ago to test some speakers and the phono section is excellent.

An Onkyo TX 4500MK2 is my daily driver and I have no real plans to change it out.

Nice, John!! Is that Lafayette receiver made in Korea? It has the same sort of look as some of the Korean-made H H Scott solid state gear from the late '70s.

Hi, I do not have that anymore, sold it a few months ago. Very nice receiver though. It may have been made in Korea? I will see if I have any pictures of the back. It went to an AK member.:thmbsp:

How does the phono-section in the Onkyo compare to that Marantz above it? I ask because I know someone who abandoned a really-nice tube-phono-pre for the phono-section of his low-wattage early '70's Marantz receiver, and he's still using it. I love the phono-section in my Sansui. I really-like the warm, smooth sound of the early '70's gear, and many of those receivers had phono-sections that compete well with fairly-expensive outboard preamps of today.

The Marantz has a great phono section, I also have a SX-850 in this room and an Heathkit AA-32 that has an AR-XA hooked up to it. The preamp in my signature sounds the best so far. I saw this on Efray:
