Bent Stylus?

Bent Stylus?

Just bought a Revolver
MC-3 Turbo HOMC cart
Mission 774LC

The stylus is not square to the cart body axis.
Is this an issue?
The cartridge was apparently aligned by an audiophile pre sale

Does it straighten out while it is playing?

Good question

The stylus is centered but has a slight angle while tracking.

The specs say 20' tracking angle
Which is about what I am seeing

Technical data
Output voltage at 1000 Hz, 5cm/sec. 3,3 mV
Channel balance at 1 kHz < 1,5 dB
Channel separation at 1 kHz > 24 dB
Channel separation at 15 kHz >15 dB
Frequency range at - 3dB 20-30.000 Hz
Frequency response FIM distortion at recommended 20-20.000 Hz + 4 / - 1 dB
Tracking ability at 315Hz at recommended tracking force *) > 70 µm
Compliance, dynamic, lateral 13 µm/mN
Stylus type Nude Fine Line
Stylus tip radius r/R 8/40 µm
Tracking force range 1,8-2,2 g (18-22 mN)
Tracking force, recommended 2 g (20 mN)
Tracking angle 20°
Internal impedance, DC resistance 100 Ohm
Recommended load impedance 47 kOhm / < 500 pF
Cartridge body material Noryl
Cartridge colour Black
Cartridge weight 4,1 g

The tracking angle of 20 degrees would be the vertical angle at which the stylus cantilever meets the record. If the stylus is far enough off to one side so that it is still off even when in contact with the record, that seems like a problem. I can't see how you'd align the stylus to the groove when it is out of alignment with the cartridge body. The cartridge body is your visual reference during the alignment.

Seems there may be some confusion here. When you look at the cartridge head on while it is playing a record, is the stylus centered in relation to the cartridge body? That is what we need to know.

The tracking angle is when you look at the cartridge from the side while playing a record, the cantilever is at an angle compared to the record surface, as Bob stated.

Just sold my other deck this morning.

Looks like I am up for a new MM cartridge.
I want to be able to swap styluses as required (sigh)

I like warm
My system works well with a little more emphasis on base with a little roll off on sibilants.

I just sold the equivelant of a Sumiko Black Pearl - liked the tonal balance - did not like the lack of detail.

Any suggestions of up to USD$300
The MC-3 Turbo was handled by the Revolver/774LC combo well but was base shy.

Sorry if I am unclear

If I run a plane through the center of the cart and perpendicular to the patter the stylus appears to be pushed to the right when arm floated in the air.

When the stylus is at the desired tracking force the stylus comes closer to the cart center plane but it is still a little off when looked at from an underneath mirror rather than a record.

Looking from the headshell down the needle sticks out in front of the cart and from top view looks aprox center but the stylus is definitely unsquare to the cart. It is hard to define "center" with the stylus a little angled to the right

OK, got it. So it's a little off.

A lot of people just align the stylus in relation to a protractor instead of the cartridge body in that case but I don't like the idea of the other end of the stylus not being centered in relation to the other parts in the signal generating area.

I guess it's a close enough or not call.

Gets more interesting.

The stylus tip was protruding out in front of the front face of the cart by about 1.0-1.5 mm as purchased

I wiggled the stylus from extreme right to extreme left of motion several times without applying bending force.

The stylus has popped back in with the tip and is now flush with the faceplate/cart front.

Looking at it with magnifier/mirror/ruler the stylus looks straight and aligned.
Sound has improved.
Adjusted the anti-skate by about 0.3 and the balances are back.

Question is - do moving coils do this?

Sounds to me like you may have a loose cantilever suspension and that you popped it back into place. Maybe it'll stay there.

If the cantilever deviates from the longitudinal (fore and aft) axis of the cartridge you have a problem. Even if it's "pulled" into alignment while playing it's going to exert more pressure on one side of the groove than it will the other. Assuming that's the only problem you can compensate for it by skewing the cartridge in the headshell.

Yup I hear you.
I very light tug on the stylus and it feels firm.

I am going to restrict my play to few sacrifice albums for a days worth of repeats see if I can pick any wear.
I am a live audio engineer with good discerning ability.

That is how I realised there was a problem as i was picking a difference in the R/L on the highs around 10,000hz after only a few plays.

I eyeballed the cart while suspended mid air and the stylus to cart looked square.
It stays square under weight..
Okay I am getting 10 hours of the same side one being played and listen for deterioration
