What If Stylus Is Bent?

When looking at TT's, sometimes I see a very nice cartridge with bent or crooked stylus. For example, I saw a trashed TT with an Ortofon X5 MC but the stylus was crooked. Is this repairable or fatal?

Usually fatal.

Trying unbend a bent cantilever is next to impossible. If the cantilever is straight but he suspension is causing it to skew one way or the other there *might* be something an expert can do for it.

In some of my gear hunts I have seen AT carts - the MM ones with stylus that has the two magnets on the a little V structure - that were inserted incorrectly catching one of the V arms making it look like a bent/skewed stylus. Sometimes these will relax when inserted properly.

All that said, the Ortofon cart you mention is MC isn't it so it doesn't have a replaceable stylus. Some MCs can be retipped but my understanding was that Ortofon does not retip. Instead they will (used to?) give trade in value on a new MC cart.

Don't you hate that?? I had the same experience. Bent the BRAND NEW stylus while moving the TT, GAME OVER!!:pity:

Sorry pal. Happened to me recently too, but it was a cheapie.
This is the reason I don't invest in expensive styli! Get a moderate one and set it up great, that's good enough!

Sound smith can retip/fix that X5-MC for $250.00 and it's a DAMN good cart. I have had a X3-MC and it's still one of my favorites I'm going to get it retipped this summer.

Hmmm. I might go back to the TS I saw the X5 MC. It was in a cheapo TT and it was cheap.

I never trust an unknown stylus even if the cantilever is fine. I've bought a few used carts and the first thing I do is replace the stylus.

I have some 49 cent thrift shop records that are just as precious to me as some of my rare and relatively valuable ones. I'm not going to endanger either with a an unknown stylus, even if I've examined it and it looks in good shape. In the scheme of things, replacement stylii just aren't that expensive.

I suspect that somewhere on this planet there is someone with the micro-tools and ability to straighten a bent cantilever. The probability of ever meeting such a person..... close to zero. Sadly.

hi folks,

this thread came right on time. i actually bent my stylus yesterday.
my hand accidently bumped into the stylus while i was taking a record off.
i hit it in a downward motion so the stylus is now sitting in a more downward angle.

it seems to sound the same. how bad is this? from what i can remember once the stylus was sitting on the record the angle was more like 30 degrees.
tell me it's okay...

so will this damage my records?

judging by the angle of the cantilever in your picture... the diamond's angle in the groove probably wont be what the manufacturer intended..

i can't say if it will or wont cause groove damage but personally i would consider a replacement stylus soon-ish...
