Best Cartridge and Stylus for Thoren TD 160 with TP16

Budget solution - how about an Audio Technica AT-95e?

If you are set on using a top mounted cartridge, the mounting holes can be drilled all the way through the top of the headshell. That's what I ended up doing with mine, as my TD-50 headshell was partially stripped. I used a drill press but it could probably also be done w/o one. This method would likely effect the value of the headshell, should you ever want to sell it, though. I loved the mod as it did away with having to locate and use the hard to find "Thorens screws".

Congrats on the TD-150 - nice turntable. And welcome to Audio Karma!

A retrofit, same as the TP60, can be done if so desired. A retrofit is quite acceptable, as it does not damage this valuable head-shell, and can be reversed at a latter date.
Ir you want to use the Ortofon, the Red, Blue, Bronze or the Black, they all come in a verso version, so there is no need to retrofit your TP-50 head-shell. If you already have a top mount Ortofon Red, go ahead and retrofit your head-shell. Other possible solutions in bottom mounted carts, a vintage Empire can be a good solution. Some Shures are also quite acceptable, and so are other Ortofon type carts.

Thanks for a very quick response ranch 22b, Moinau and Balifly – much appreciated and no doubt allows me to move to the next problem I may encounter!

So Shure, AT and Verso all possible.

Than you all

so was thinking Shure 97 XE or possibly AT 120 eb???

Nothing wrong with either one. :)

Hello from up north!
I finally put my hand on a turntable to experience the true analog sound. 200$ for an original TD-160 in great condition seems too hard to pass on. So without any knowledge I’m jumping in to realize that theres a isht tons of stuff that I need to learn to make more educated choices...

The table is going to be connected to a Shindo Monbrison last Ken model circa 2012 phono stage. I see people getting step up transformers etc. I’m not certain what are the advantages and if its required depending on cartridge and stylus that is chosen.

The matching part between the system and the cartridge eludes me completely, so any light shed will help me greatly. Around a $500 -1K budget what should I look at if I use the original TP-16 and/or should I go and change the arm completely?

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Jonathan

the step-up trafo thing is specifically if you are using a low output moving coil cart and want to pair it with a phono stage designed for a typical magnetic cartridge. LOMC is somewhere in the 0.3 mv output range, typical mag cart is more like 3mv.
