Best financial buy? McIntosh or Yamaha?

Hiya,

And why in the world would you make that kind of stipulation?

Well pulling out fire extinguisher for all the flames around me.

What I meant is that people have a larger loyality to Mac equipment. And even MAC the company itself has a better brand of loyalty to its owners.

The Yamaha is a awesome unit and I was NOT disparaging it. More talking about the original manufacturer.

I stand by my statement that long term the Macs will be usable as after a while the Yamaha will break some unumtabimum part and the parent company would have EOL'd the spare parts.

Well, the MX-2000 is not a vfet unit so I don't see that necessarily being the case although you are correct that McIntosh is better about keeping parts for their old units. But I also don't know, it could be that Yamaha does have parts available for the Centennial series...

Valid point.

To me though, the disparity in performance between the specific mentioned systems is the primary deciding issue. Heck, most of the gear that AKer's own face the dreaded potential for future parts unavailability. It just isn't a primary deciding factor when choosing high fidelity equipment; at least it isn't for me. Most every problem I have had with my gear over the years has been able to be fixed by my techs that I use.

Hiya,

Well I can see I was double stupid in this thread. My choice of words "Scrap Metal" was insulting and hardly my intention. But I stuck my foot in my mouth and I can't take that back.

I could have elaborated my point with a little less vigor.

My apology's and if we should ever meet up I will buy the drinks.

Hey we are all passionate about our audio equipment aren't we? Sometimes it's hard not to offend when you take a stand for your preferred equipment. :bash:

If you cant get parts for something, doesnt matter how good it sounds. I had two Technics SP 15 turtables, one of the IC's that are unobtainium failed and it was nothing but a doorstop after that. Loved the table but with out that part.......

I would not want to go anywhere NEAR a McIntosh vs. Yamaha debate (been there done that) BUT based on the specific models you set forth, I personally would DEFINATELY get the Yamahas. They are in a different league performance-wise compared to the old school SS Macs you mentioned. Whatever other comparative criteria there may be, these specific Yamaha's will sound better than the specific Macs you mention. The MX-2000 is an absolutely AWESOME amplifier! I had both and they are part of Yamaha's Titanium Centennial limited edition models. They are rare, VERY desirable and will hold their values just fine. Picture below is of the one I had. :smoke:

Thanks Elroy!

Is this the driving factor why you would choose those SPECIFIC McIntosh models the OP listed OVER the Yamaha Centennial pieces or are you talking in the broad sense of McIntosh vs. Yamaha?

The topic is to help the OP make a decision in choosing between specifc models not a McIntosh vs. Yamaha debate. Nobody is saying that Yamaha is a better brand than McIntosh we are saying that in our opinion, the specific Yamaha models he listed are more to be desired than the specific McIntosh models and indeed these specific Yamaha's will even hold if not go up in value.

You guys are ALL wet & fulla Beans...My Kraco Super Duper Br-549 all-in-one will blow 'em ANY Mac or Yammy into the weeds...(grin)

The CX an MX 2000 are definitely more rare. The two Mac models are readily available on CL, and the auction site that charges ridiculous fees.

If it was my dollar, I'd go with the Yamaha's in a heartbeat. It's really a no-brainer. Better sounding, better investment and it would be foolish to think the Mac stuff is built better and IMO, quite the opposite. The MX-2000 is a beast weighing in at 60+ pounds and was only second from the TOTL to the MX-10000 which was a $10,000+ amp in it's day. I believe the MX-2000 retailed for around $4,000. Not that price equates to quality, but these Yamaha's were seriously well built and good sounding amps.

I think a lot of people are blindly loyal to the McIntosh brand cachet. All Macs are not created equal. Besides that, the C28 and MC2105 are a dime a dozen. They're readily available now and will be in the somewhat distant future if you should want them later.

What system do you feel would be a better financial investment in this day of hyper inflation and a shrinking dollar? They both sound good.

System 1,
McIntosh pre-amp C28 and the power-amp MC2105 with original factory wood cabinets, original manuals.
Excellent condition. All original inside.

System 2,
Yamaha pre-amp CX-2000 and the power amp MX-2000.
Very good condition. No remote, (don't know if the CX-2000 had a remote.) All original inside.

If both of these systems were available for the same money, what system do you feel is going to hold its value or increase in value?

Thanks,
Ed
