Best integrateds of the 80s?

Naim Nait.
Not a lot of power. Looks like it was put together in a shop class.

BUt the sound is unreal. THis thing pure and simple makes music.

Another vote for the Naim Nait. Low power, superbly musical.

Also, the legendary NAD 3020.

Nice to see there are at least 2 of us here. Thought I was just pissin in the wind for a while. :)

Considered the NAD also, but I think Nait was just the more musical of the two.
And it is the first watt that matters the most!

There again the Inca Tech Claymore was supposed to be the Nait Killer
50 watt class A

(It's been put to one side while I listen to a Yamaha CA 600)

I have a PMA-300V, and it was nice to see the official specs on it. I've used it in various office and bedroom systems, and it was my main amp for a while.

If you ever want to sell the old 300V, get a hold of me offline.

The Nait was definitely the better amp of the two, although they were at different price points. I used to own the Nait2 which I'm sorry now that I sold. I've been tempted recently by the SuperNait or Nait5i for my bedroom system. Naim products are one of the few rare breeds that makes you completely forget about the equipment and focus on the music.

Always wanted a Nait.

The Luxman 5L15 from its "Laboratory Reference Series" was a pretty nice integrated as well but may have been from the late '70s. I had the 5C50 preamp for a while from the same series.

I have a nice Proton D540 Integrated, built like a tank, weighs in at a good fighting weight, pre-ins and outs and lots of headroom power, can be bridged. I have heard that Proton built for NAD

My personal favourites would include, at the lower end of the scale, the G5500 Sansui receiver and at the slightly higher end of the Sansui 1980 catalogue, the Sansui AU919. I only wish I had bought the TU919 Tuner too.

I tried all the AU range, from the AU217 upwards, and I liked them all. Just as a matter of interest, I was in Brazil recently, and I saw an old battered AU515, pumping out Brazilian drum music with ease in a music shop.

I tried to buy it from the owner, but he said it was over 20 years old and had never given him a problem, even though it was used for six days a week in the store, so no way would he sell. Good for him.

The 1980´s catalogue I mentioned was for the UK market. I scanned it as well, so if anyone wants a copy, just ping me your e-mail address, and I will pass it on.

Best Wishes for 2008 everyone....

I'm genuinely amazed at love of Denon PMA stuff; I go onto the thread with the intention of mentioning it and the 2nd post beats me to it! I've been using a PMA 520 for the last several years, gifted to me by a very good friend, and it's been wonderful.

I'd agree on the Denon stuff. Heavy duty built in the 80s. I can't say how they are now. All I know is the dealer here that sold them years ago dumped them over quality control issues. That said I just made a deal with someone to buy a used PMA-900 amp. I will sell the 720 I just got. Any takers? PM if you are interested. If so it would need to be fixed first. I know a few on here have the 900. Any comments on that amp? I've had the 300 before.

Yes it is! Good eye. I used to have a LV-103 amp, but later sold it. I also now have a D-105u CD player. That is where I got the picture for my Avatar. I need to get a better shot though, as that pic is a bit washed out and tinted color.

Cool... I almost bought one. How did you like it?

The LV-103 was a smooth sounding unit. But it really lacked a lot of guts higher current amps have.

As for the Luxman CD player- I can't say for sure. I gave one a listen for a day and it was very good sounding. I had to send it back and I eventually got another one. My current one needs new tubes as bass is lacking. I'll see how it fairs then.

Onkyo Integra for a good, durable, no-fuss unit. I also have a Luxman LV-105 Hybrid that is used when I need a tube fix (since it has both!)
