For me the SX-1280 is the best looker of all the monsters. The 1980 has it's face all askew. With the 1280 they got it perfect.

Oh yes, those Fishers are indeed beautiful. But "The Scott" is drop dead gorgeous. More so than any piece I've ever seen.

There was a pretty long thread on these a while back and it's got me on the lookout since. I really, really like the piano keys and chrome. Everyone says they sound great as well so that's all the better.
None have popped up near me in several years of looking so it's not meant to be just yet.

It's an interesting piece. The entire front face is chrome on cast metal. The switches could be used on the dash of a 1960s car. The whole thing is built that way. Never seen anything like it.
I'm not going to wax poetic about the sound until I fix the balance that centers at 11 o'clock. But yes it performs. It's rated 50 watts but no, it's really 40 on the scope.
If you get one you will always have one, I'll leave it at that.

These are my votes.
I’ve kept these as much for their looks as my love of their sound.
Sx-1250. Has a little wow factor without being over the top (my only complaint about the 1980...it’s just a little too much for my tastes)
Marantz 2235 (nonB). This one is just beautiful and balanced. And I love the case asalaah made for me
My fav...the simple, humble, and modest sx-828. (Have a 727 as well, but like the toggles more than the buttons). This one just does it for me for some reason. Probably the orange indicator.

Well that's embarrassing. Guess I didn't read closely enough.
Why leave the lights off when that is such an integral part of how a receiver looks?
Frankly I think this was an unreasonable request. The LIGHTED TUNING DIAL is a HUGE part of what makes a receiver attractive to me in the first place. I expect a lot, perhaps most, would agree with me! And having a lovely wood case like my Sony STR-6065 can make any piece of gear even more beautiful.
It's like asking what's the most beautiful sports car - but it has to be unpainted and without wheels!! The OP has not posted since 2009, so personally I feel free to ignore their original request. Who's with me?

I'm with you!
For a receiver that was designed with a lighted faceplate, that's part of its style. Lights can be used poorly, so a design with tasteful and elegant lighting is especially nice.
And the case? Real wood cases are an integral part of the charm of vintage gear. I was once given a Marantz 4270 and part of the restoration work was finding a beautiful wooden cabinet. Same goes for others I've worked on: AR (amp, tuner and receiver), MAC4100 (ditched the awful vinyl-clad for real wood) and others that I bought partly BECAUSE of their real wood cabinets. Then there are countless tube tuners and amps, and the DB-1A/B preamp. All enhanced by the beauty of real wood.

I currently own 2 of the above underdogs(Fisher & Optonica) and have owed 3 Nikko's in the past, one bought new in 1975. Also have a Sansui 9090db and 9090 for comparison and a lot of the underdogs give up very little in my opinion.

I used to sell Optonica and Nikko back in the day. Very nice...and that Optonica is a real looker!
