Best Video Processor I Have Ever Seen

I just had this very discussion with my good friends av installer. He is selling him all Fujitsu panels, the most expensive in the world might I add.

I suggested he get Pannys and run them with an external scaler for the best PQ. His answer was a legitimate one and that was that A. the Fuji's have the best internal scaler on the market and B. He is running everything via Cat 5 to Component for whole house audio/video. In that case a scaler can only do so much.

Let me add that no internal scaler can lay a finger on the scaling abilities of even the most simple external scaler. The external scalers are designed for one purpose only while the internal plasma scalers are essentially garbage.

Internal display scalers do vary in quality. Since the built in scaler is responsible for matching the input video signal to the pixel structure of the display, its' quality determines the display's performance. As the price of the display increases the quality of the scaler goes up. Usually.
When you use an outboard scaler say feeding 1080p to a display, the internal scaler will not be performing line rate conversion or deinterlacing. It will be in the video signal path though. The internal scalers use the very same technology and chip sets as external scalers use. To say internal scalers are all junk is too sweeping an assumption.

Ron I disagree with just about every word in your post. The internal scaler is only a fraction of what determines a displays performance. For example, Fujitsu buys its glass from panasonic and changes its scaling internally to AVM2. While the AVM2 is superior to the Pannys scaler, the Panny looks 10 times better than the Fuji when sent its native rate via an external scaler. So, the scaler in this case has no bearing on the display device, the panny is actually better.

Ron there isnt a single internal scaler on any plasma, for exmple, that is a gennum chipset so, you are mistaken. Nor, are there any Realta based internal scalers so, there is no comparison between those chipsets and anything else on the market now. And besides the chipsets, the factory algorithms are garbage when compared to the sophisticated programs being written for outboard scalers.

As far as the internal video scaler being in the signal path, once again that is incorrect. When sent a native signal, nearly all digital display devices bypass the internal scaling and accept a pass through of the scaled signal. It is seen as a PC signal is some case but, in any case it isnt touched one bit.

I am saying that there isnt an internal scaler on any digital display device that compares to even the simplest of external scalers.

I said displays which means all formats. Many do have the Genum scaler built in. Just look at the schematics or the actual boards. These scalers are in circuit for color, tint, etc adjustment even when the set is fed a full 1080p signal.

Other than a handful of fairly expensive DLP projectors, could you tell me a single:

CRT with a Gennum chipset?
LCD with a Gennum Chipset?
Plasma with a Gennum chipset?
CRT PJ with a Gennum Chipset?

I dont know of any but, in any case I love to learn so please do reply.

Absolutely many LCD projectors are using this solution. I never mentioned CRTs. You said all internal scalers are junk which I think is a very broad statement. Most of the stuff I see is 'fairly expensive' though since it is in big theater installations.
What makes the plasmas tick? Beats me, but some of them sure have nice pictures and I would have to add the latest LCD glass displays to that statement.

Ivan, I was just wondering if you ran the audio through your video processor and then into your Mac pre/pro. If not, does your video processor handle lip sync issues?

No, Lip sync issues if any are handled by an "Alchemy2 D.Dad" which is in the optical digital audio link of all Digital sources.

For that display I would highly recommend the Cystalio II
 
Mike for your set even the crystallios least expensive scaler costs more than the display.

I suggest the DVDO VP-50. Its 1/3 the price and 75% as good..way better than the internal scaler in the Samsung.
 
I use a DVDO on my Pioneer Elite RPTV & like it. Unfortunately I only use that display for my MS-300 menu.
 
You use a VP-50 for the menu's or one of the other DVDO products? The VP-50 is a totally different animal and a true scaler whereas the older DVDO products (pre VP-20) were more like toys.

It's not a VP-50, its one of the older DVDO units. After all it's only for a menu!
