Beta Speakers

24fps

New Member
30 years ago, I lived in Dallas, Texas and during that time there was a company selling a range of horn-based speakers that went under the name of "Beta" There were several different models, and I lusted after a pair, but was just starting out in my career, etc., etc....

Nowadays, I occasionally I do a (sometimes very thorough) Google search, but always come up empty. Does anyone other than myself remember these speakers? Anyone ever hear of a pair coming up for sale?

Thanks,

Infinities, maybe?

Are you sure it wasn't Infinity's Beta line? If it wasn't, maybe you can give a general description of the speakers you remember, i.e. drivers sizes, enclosure form, etc.

I know THIS isn't the one you're talking about, but maybe it's the same company?:thmbsp:

a couple years ago, i was cruising the SA and came across a pair of the big BetaSound horn speaks in remarkably good shape, but SA had them priced at $225 and i was 'speakered up' at the moment and didn't need another pair. however, i recognized them for what they were, and kept an eye on them for a while, hoping they would drop the price. then they were gone.

coincidentally, another AK'er from the DFW area did a little photo essay on his rehab of a pair of, you guessed it, BetaSound horns. he did a really nice job on them. i asked him if they were the ones from SA, but he would not reveal his source. i bet you could find the thread in a search....

Not sure about this, but I remember Stereophile reviewing a pair of them, perhaps in the very late 70s. My memory is that they were in the same issue as the Fried Beta and the Sequerra Metranome with the construction tubes protruding for linear phase (maybe the model 9). Stereophile said that they were more colored than their usual fare, but not objectionably so, and offered real virtues of impact and dynamics etc. They liked them, while warning that some listeners would not.
