Bic 980

Hi Dan, he's got the 981 which has the strobe cast into the platter edge like the 1000 instead of a paper strobe like the 980.

A certain amount of drift is normal for a belt drive but it should never be enough to hear, especially BICs.

It could be the O-ring. See if it is tight enough to stay on the platter right under the gear on the shaft. It really should stay there by itself. If it is too loose, it definitely can cause wow/flutter as it squirms around as the platter is turning

If you have an original red/orange BIC belt, it's unlikely that is the cause as they last pretty much forever. If it looks good without any pieces missing or otherwise deformed, it's probably OK. I guess it would never hurt to get a spare anyway.

O-ring and belt actually look ok. I saw dualparts had them bundled so I might get the spare just to see if it helps.

It doesn't necessarily have to be small enough in diameter to stay on the platter spindle itself but the diameter should be small enough so it just encircles the spindle so it can't squirm around while the platter is rotating.

EDIT: I know I kind of contradicted myself re my earlier post but, although ideally, the o-ring would stay on the spindle by itself, it's not absolutely necessary. Just so it is small enough so it can't move around and let any of the platter spindle change position vertically.

Mine isn’t on the spindle. It’s on the platter before the teeth/gear. Is that not correct?

Yes. I use the term "spindle" rather loosely. I'm afraid, although when I say "platter spindle" I mean the part attached to the platter with the cam drive gear on it.
