Big V-FET thread

Big Sony V-FET thread

.....

First you will need a manual, here are the manuals for the 5650:
http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/sony/ta-5650.shtml
......

I have been trying to find a readable 5650 Service Manual that shows the adjustment steps. The hifiengine site has a US model version that is a very poor copy with the adjustment page unreadable and the UK model version is very clear but does not include the page with the adjustment steps.

Anyone have adjustment instructions for the US model they can share or point me to where I can find it?

I now have a TA-5550 that I have modded- I will start a new thread for that. Has anyone used a VFETless 4650 for a preamp? (maybe I should start a new thread for that but want to listen to the 5550)
I used the Semens top of the line filter caps on the 5550 and am chomping at the bit to listen.

When you say VFETless are you asking if someone is using only the preamp stage? I am using my TA-4650 right now as a preamp with my Yamaha B2. Sounds very good. IMO, the TA-4650 is one of the best values in vintage audio equipment. Don't tell anyone in the Yamaha Forum I said this but my 4650 sounds just as good as my B2 and I see B2's selling for over 4x what 4650's frequently sell for. I have completely refurbed both my B2 and 4650.

Does your 4650 have the VFET's in? I have the one monster rebuild and one that I stole the VFET's from because http://sawyeraudio.com/ can't seen to refrain from the Variac.
Yes, my 4650 is fully working and has all its Vfet's working. But I am using only the preamp so the black jumpers are removed and I connect the preamp outs directly to the inputs on my B2.

Are you thinking that you have to remove the VFET's from the 4650 to use it as a preamp? You don't.

:rflmao:Well... uh... it sounds as good at lower volume levels with easier to drive speakers. ;) I just bought a second B2 that I am refurbishing right now. I plan to use it bi-amped with my other B2 on a speaker that handles more watts than the 4650 delivers.

OK, I guess you are safe now :)

DO NOT _EVER_ DO THIS!!!
If this tech worked for me, he'd not only get fired but his palms glued onto his face in front of his eyes so that he can't even see let alone do something that stupid.
If old caps are to be retained for mechanical purposes, the proper way is to carefully open them up and hollow out the old contents then put the new ones in and make proper connections. 9 out of 10 good techs have no notion of VFET amps and should best not work on them, let alone any 'tech' like this one.
he's done worse....to a few other v-fet amps. Ask me how I know.....
