BIGGEST vintage amp/receiver ever made

theblackknight

Mikes off! No recording!
Nobody here really talks about vintage monster amps that much. What is the BIGGEST(wpc) amp ever made in the 70's? There has been lots of talk about receviers--the biggest of those are the SA-1000(330wpc), the G-33000(300wpc), the 2600(300wpc) and the SX-1980(270wpc). But what amps are bigger?

The biggest one Ive ever heard of is the Rotel RB-5000 at 500wpc!!!!!:jawdrop:

Can anything beat that?:scratch2: :scratch2: :scratch2: :scratch2: :scratch2:

There's a Carver amp (TFM-75) that is 750wpc at 8ohm and 1000 at 4ohm (a home amp...not pro). Wow. I need one of those!

Then again, that's from 20 years ago or so, so it might not be labeled as vintage.

Whoa!! I was thinking of the McIntosh 2500, 500 wpc.

Phase Linear had a 500 wpc D-500 power amp made in the late 70's. SAE had a 400 wpc model 2600 power amp.

Therein lies a problem. Its like gear that is 10-20 years old has no place anywhere. No old enough to be considered vintage at AK and too old to be recognized as current at other forums. The "middle-aged" just fall right through the cracks.

Luxman M-05, 95 lbs, 105 wpc Class A dual mono.

Marantz SM-1000, 98 lbs, 400wpc at 8 ohms, 600 wpc at 4 ohms.

Also, Accuphase P-300.

Its like people hardly ever hear of these though. Everone talks about the sui BA-5000, but all these other monster just sorta hide. It the ba5000 way better than all the rest? or what?

The Marantz SM 1000, like the McIntosh 2500, was available starting in '80.
Out of all the monster power amps from the '70s, I think the ones to go with would be Mac 2300 (300 wpc, very conservatively) or the Sansui BA 5000 (also 300 conservative wpc). They both sound great and they're about as bulletproof as high power amps of that decade get.

I'm glad someone mentioned the MC2300, my friend has a mint one that was just serviced and while it may not be THE biggest, it tips the scales at 120lbs which is more than big enough to be considered huge in my books

I accept ANY solid state gear here.
Vintage is the focus, of course, but hey, most of my stuff is from the 80s & 90s.
