Bitcoin

If one wants to make a crapload of money, from a load of crap, do like Jean Pain did. Build a few of these and kiss the grid's ass goodbye.

I'm selling dancoins. They're $5.00 a piece and you can get 10 of them for the price of nine. Buy larger amounts and the discount is even higher. Supplies are limited until I can print more and they're good for using at anyplace that will accept them.

Hurry and buy them while they're still cheap. Cash and most other forms of payment are acceptable and I will send you a genuine certificate signed by me with the amount purchased. I will consider trading them for stereo gear if you have something worth having and I want it.

Don't be the last person on your block to own dancoins. But wait!!! Buy them within 24 hrs. and receive the bonus of two for the price of one. Accepting orders now.

I manage my own portfolio and think a lot about risk. One economist I follow described the riskiest assets as the ones that have experienced the fastest (and most recent) run up. These have a much higher risk of a rapid fall. In that regard, Bitcoin is one of the most dangerous assets (as an investment) that exist today. It has lost half its value this year (making it less risky now), but that run up last year was incredible and driven by wild speculation from inexperienced investors around the world buying it as a momentum play.

Over the long-term, I agree with Jamie Dimon and Warren Buffett, that almost all these cryptocurrencies will likely fall to about zero in value. I don't see how any major government will allow them to replace fiat currencies over the long-term.

But I could be wrong.

Just my views, I am staying away from all the cryptos, but I do read and follow them regularly.

Best of luck.

Hey Snade! Long time, howzit going? See you move to a warmer location. Hope all is well!

Bitcoin recently took another dump. It's at $6,290.
Last December it was just under $20,000. I don't fully understand it and I don't trust it.

I live in Silicon Valley. Nearly all the best tech's, world headquarters are only a bike ride away. I've worked for many, so I have a decent understanding of things.

AMD is up 85+% since last December.
Google is up 12% in 3 months. They are planning a new 3 million sqft. campus not to far in San Jose. They've become a monster and growth is steady.
Apple is up nearly 14,000% since 2003. It split a lot. Their new spaceship campus, while cool, sucks. But hey, they are the first to a 1 trillion $ valuation. One of the few still climbing even after the destructive tariffs.
I picked another winner, it was up 13% in two weeks. Then the tariffs hit, it's been at -21%. That's been a painful thorn.

Hint: and go for the long term.

I Love AAPL.

Word has it, in San Francisco you can get "sh*tcoins. People drop them all over the sidewalks. All you have to do is pick them up!

That was so two decades ago. Jobs didn't come back until 1997.

AAPL is currently $213 per stock. That's after two, 2 for 1 splits between 2000-2005 and a 7 for 1 in 2014. There was also one 2 for 1 split in the '87.

A $1000 investment at the IPO is now worth $520,000+ and that doesn't included dividends.

It's still going up.

We have something similar here in California. It's called "Indian Casinos".
They aren't too similar, in that even a casino at its worst provides a service, maybe has a restaurant, hotel, employees, etc.

Whereas the best anybody can say about Bitcoin is that it "might be money." But other than that, its existence is not based on the conversion of a service or good. It exists as its own service and good. Time and money have been used to "mine" it, but only with the speculation that it will be worth something after they find some of it. It wasn't like when investors formed co-ops to mine gold, which historically has always had worth.

Because of that, the value has less stability, for at least the dollar value follows what the market is doing. A slick speculator may have been able to make money off these bitcoins, but until bitcoin is traded regularly for goods, a value doesn't exist for it.

For now, what it is good for is buying products or services from the Dark Web. It is good for a quick transaction where it costs the same amount that you are purchasing something for in a single transaction (of course plus fees). Other than that, until enough people are using it to make it more stable, I would not invest in it at all.

The whole concept is very interesting tho since nobody can stop our whole world from going digital over time. Something I will be happy to be dead before it all happens.

I don't know what it's based on and do not trust it. I expect that eventually a few will make a killing and the rest will be left out when it collapses.
A vestige may remain as a laundry for dark web transactions.

Yes, 1998.
I was just showing what a stock chart looks like before it crashes back down to where it starts up, which is what happened to AAPL.
Bitcoin ditto.

Wall Street legitimized "Bitcoin"on the CBOE futures market as a trading(casino) vehicle.
As long as there is enough liquidity and the market manipulators make money, bitcoin is legit but only as a trading vehicle.

It is a shame to lose your life savings.
We read about families selling their homes , quitting their jobs and putting everything into bitcoin.
It's a shame people don't recognize a bubble when it's happening.
Depending on which point one invested, there was time to get out with a profit and even when it rolled over there were rebounds whereby losses could have been limited.
HODL doesn't work out when a stock chart goes parabolic and there's only HOPE.
It happens to the best of companies when things get silly.

On a lark, I bought 100 bitcoins back when they were fluctuating wildly between $3 and $10.
I'm having trouble remembering exactly when. Doesn't help that I was probably drunk at the time.
So yeah, at some point I made a few thousand off bitcoin. Nothing major.

Do I wish I'd held on?
Eh, not really.
If I hadn't sold them when I did, I'd still have sold them far before the peak.
I'm not a gambler.

Basically the same with Apple stock except the deal was more lucrative.
I bought quite a lot of shares after the dot-com crash. In fact, put half my wife's inheritance into it.
6 years later, I'm smelling another market crash so I cash out, take the profit. Even then the return was jaw-dropping.

Yeah, if I'd held on, those shares would now be worth a whole lot more. Blah blah blah.
But you gotta remember that hindsight is always 20/20....and in 2008-2009, Apple lost half it's value in the crash.
I don't know about you, but I doubt I'd have slept a wink during the time it took Apple to recover if I hadn't cashed-out.
As it was, I slept quite well....which to me is worth quite a lot on it's own.

The "graph" posted by tubed in comment #31 is all too accurate.
Notice at what point "Smart Money" kicks in.
All that's missing is when "Smart Money" cashes out.

Guess it's the perfect time to update this thread. How’s it going, guys? Have your opinions about Bitcoin changed? As a trader, I’m sure it goes up. As an investor, I’m really stressed out because of its summer crash.

My low opinion of crypto currency has not changed. The FTX debacle has just confirmed my earlier comment in this thread regarding crypto currency and a Ponzi scheme.

Another factor that @SoCal Sam and others have touched on that will eventual stall its momentum and even eliminate crypto is its reliance on server space. As people begin to understand the ecology impact of crypto it will decline in popularity and value.
