Blue faced SX recievers

Pick up a fluroscan SX-3600, SX3800, SX3900 and give it it a spin. Were those audible moans I just heard? They have nice blue lights as well, maybe not as cool as the earlier blue lighters but they will deliver musical frequencies to thine ears as well.

Because of the digital readouts (and likely other reasons as well) replacing the Vu meters a lot of people won't touch them, and therefore they may still be gotten at a "nice" price.
I have a SX3600 in one room. I also own an SX838 and an SX780.I like them all. Someday I will pick up a SX50 series for the heck of it.

I see you chose an SX-1010 as one of your choices, let us know if you pick one up. Get one for me too!

You get no argument from me on either the 828 or the 1010,many many others have come to the same conclusion as you have.

But that sounds about right for ones I have been looking at. If it was an 828 I'd be all over it.

I just checked some of the specs on the 828 and noticed it is just 32lbs, while the 850 (with similar wpc) is 10lbs heavier at 42lbs. Is there a big difference in the power transformers, heat sinks?

I think the 50 series are some of the most over built recievers ever.

I'm running my 828 as a pre-amp through the PL 400. Very warm sound. Loved it running my old Polks without the PL 400. Needed a bit more power to drive my big guys and the combo really turned out well.

Finding an SX-828 seems rather tough. So I am also going to add one more receiver to the list.

In order:
1) SX-828
2) QX-949 or QX-949A ( I know they are quad, but love the looks )
3) SX-1010
4) SX-939

Does anyone know the difference between a QX-949 and a QX-949A?

Just one more persons opinion, my all around favorite vintage Pioneer receiver would be the SX-828.

Best combination of sound and looks.

My SX-828 sounds great driving a pair of HPM-100s.

I remember them as well. I was looking to get an SX-880 and when we went to a local store they had the SX-950 on sale. It was the last one and I just took one look and the salesman moved away from all the other recievers he wanted me to look at. It just needs a little work but the 50 or 80 series is not the look I'm after here.

I have the 950, 737 and 680, as far as looks go, each has it's own style. The 950 is the classic silver face Pioneer, and with it's size it says "brute". The 737 has the blue face and light up dial pointer, it says more "old school" in appearance, and is very beautiful in appearance and sound, very warm. The 680 has the black power VU meters that, let's face it, while really useless, are just too dang cool to look at, especially when you have it cranked up!

That might look OK, but not the same as the blue back light. The 50 and 80 series are edge lit, not back lit. It does sound interesting, but I would want to make sure it was reversable. Maybe both kinds of lights with a switch on the back might work too.

The pre 50 series Pioneers have a more transistor sound. While not bad ( I own a nice SX 850) I prefer earlier Pioneers. Had a several SX 727s, should have kept the last one! It was mint! Gave it away and should have mouthed balled it. Nice tube like sound. Soft and warm. Have owned the earlier SX 6000s and QX 4000, QX 8000, and QX 949s. All sounded terrific. My early Pioneer system is a SA 9100 tied ADS 810s with a Dual 1219/Shure V15 type II! Nice sounding system. I end my day playing a record! Prefer the tube like sound of the earlier Pioneers. Have a Aker with a QX 4000,cheap. Have no room for it,been recapped and only $100 on Bartertown. Someone ought to grab it. Best I can give it is backup status. Nice small quad (4 channel) had one not as nice as this one but not bad.

Right now I have a SX-434 (bought new), a 737 and a 939 in the x3x series. A 424 and a 790 ( black dial face version of the 780). If I didn't like the 790's look (which I do) it would have been long gone. The x2x and a3x sound very similar to my tube setup's. All of them have been recapped, certain transistors replaced for longevity/alleviate problems of originals, new relays. SO it's not a matter of them "being tired and worn out". The 790 is the same. It's got new caps, transistors, the known problems have been fixed, but it sounds too strident, too what I would call overly bright and STERILE......basically FLAT! There is no feeling to the music. It's like 2 students playing the same piece for a test in Band class. One plays it exactly as it was written like a robot, the other puts some emotional inpact into the piece. I guess it could be construed as coloration, but it's nice to have it built in.

I'm surprised you find the 939 somewhat ugly but don't mention that for the 1010. They share the same basic layout in the front panel, and possibly the same panel with slightly different button layout.

I don't find them "ugly" I just like the look of the 828 better. I am willing to over look that on the 1010 because of the better power specs. If I thought any of them were ugly, they wouldn't even be on the list.
