Bose 601 II journey...

Some more images

First image shows effective use of the tie blocks. Nice if parts need to be changed out, clip, remove, mount with new zip tie. Simple.

Dang, should have turned the image. This is the first "clean" 601. All prettied up. Second image not so flattering, not so steady with my picture taking anymore. Next image with grill on. I cleaned the grills, soaked in a tub for hours, but I think there is wear and fading. Like to find a way to make them look a little better, but not bad.

Last, side by side, one complete and the other, well, not so. The latter is done now, just don't have images yet. Need to fix the label, again, on the one.

And by the way, that's about as good as I could get my grilles to look as well. That odd black to brown color change is nigh impossible to match up.

You done great on that one. Looks very nice.

Thanks. Been listening to them every day here at work. I really need to take them home and hook them up to one of my bigger receivers. Give them some clean big power. They are definitely growing on me.

Beautification time...

So, after weeks of enjoying them I thought it time to purdy them up. I think they look almost like new.

Tip: Armor All. I thought, what the hell. Sprayed on one grill and took an image (like a before/after). Some difference eh?

Not sure I'll add more to this post. Hope people enjoy the trip and information.

They look great! Nice work. I would definitely grab a pair of those if they passed my way for a good price. Very interesting speaker.

Brought them home last night. Going to rearrange the man cave shortly to make room for the 601 and the newly repaired DSS9 speakers. Enjoyed the 601 at work, now look forward to a serious test drive at home, properly set up, of course.
 
Thank you all for the great compliments. I look forward to posting more on how they sound properly setup. That may take some time since placement is so important.

I used my 303 Aerospace (better than ArmorAll) and instead of using a Sharpie on my faded, dusty woofers, I applied some to them as well. Very lightly. Darkened them right up. And it did wonders for those grills.

Had my Carver receiver on them last night, let the amp and Marantz cdp cook awhile while I was outside.

Stan Getz's saxophone was all around me.

These Bose may not be the end all speaker, but damn, they're sure a good time. I don't think I can part with mine, short of absurd money offers.

I was so depressed last night. I tried to get my room reorganized, so many speakers to move around. I eventually got the 601 in place, but there were still some issues with surrounding stuff that would be in the path of the reflected sound, so need to make a few more adjustments. Hopefully in the next day or two. Can't wait. Have these and the new to me DSS9 to test.

Growing impatient.
 
Copa, I know the feeling. I have a Sansui AU-G99X I had fully restored by Mattsd back in November. He also finished my Pioneer 1250.

Would you believe I have YET to hook up that Sansui? I literally don't have a single space to put it in. It sits on the shelf, staring at me.

Too. Damned. Much. Stuff. Nice problem, but still a problem.

Nice rig. Have a 9090db I only need to get the tuner working on again. I would so love to have that in the man cave.
 
Finally got them hooked up and running. What a pain. I had to reorganize the man cave completely. Pulled 6 speakers systems out, 4 moved to the living room where we have the HT system (couple weeks ago). 2 were brought to my business where they will be cleaned up and sold. Then speakers had to be moved around such that the rear facing speakers wouldn't be obstructed or cause issues with the reflected sound.

I didn't get to spend much time with them, sorry to say, but timing is everything. The DSS9 speakers took precedence and I wound up spending the better part of the weekend listening to (and totally enjoying) those speakers.

What time I did spend with the 601 I found them to be really strong in vocals and other mid to high end sonics. The bottom end, however, wasn't up to what I'd been reading. Now, in all fairness, when you've listened to 12" driven speakers for so long, or the Bose 901, you come to expect a certain level of performance in that area.

Where I believe I have an issue is power. I'm thinking these speakers are NOT low volume speakers, not for bass response anyway. With the volume up, not loud perse, they do come alive. They handled Nickleback just fine, but listening to Styx I was a tad let down. Different type of music and different engineering between those two.

I don't want for anyone to think negatively of this. I need to spend some quality time with them and get a better feel for their characteristics and possibly placement. Based on imaging, I'm thinking the placement is actually pretty good right now. They do image well, no issues there.
 
Try them 6-in off the wall with some clean power, maybe color the highs a bit. they should come alive @ 50 watts. and up.

That's it. I love them for 1-10 watt listening sessions. Louder than background, but not LOUD.
