Bose 601 "owner" opinions please

This is close.....

Even hard core bose bashers dont bash a 601 or a 301 for that matter. For the size the 301's are damn good too.
And 601 highs are what are a wee bit lacking (mod it and it is a lot better if you ask me) ...
Heck a 201 is pretty decent too.

Bose bashers usually bash a 901 and sorta ignore the room dependency of it or they have an acoustically anti 901 room. That group of bashers are more bashing out of frustration than actual problems ...

Of course the AM3, AM5 etc etc are really garbage. They need to be bashed.

Cool.

We're open to modding. What specific element (or combination) of the 601 would you alter first & which series are you addressing? After background listening & critical listening, I find some media to be a tad bright, some a tad brighter, and some simply gorgeous spot-on..

My latest restoration. 340#..60" tall

I'm pondering the xover points for series l & ll. Copa mentioned a 'Dual Frequency' circuit design-

Morph the Cat's 'H-Gang' this am really makes the 601 prove their investment

Looks like something for the Adams Family Mansion. Cool. Put some candles in that bugger. ;)

Was thinking about mods this morning. I was going to suggest changing the front firing resistor to a higher value, but looking at the schematic that won't work. Then thought about a pot, but that too could be a challenge due to the way the tweeters are wired. I'd rather not change the rear drivers since they are the reflected sound. The fronts are more likely to "beam" than the rears, so adjusting them would be a best option.

I thought of a pot as well for the high end, but was waiting for someone with a working knowledge of electronics. Since series ll xover was raised to 2500 Hz (series one is 2KHz), my first thought was to unwind the coil some turns and listen- even if it took it up to 22-23KHz, then trial and error with the cabinet height.. at the moment I have one cab 16" & the other is 9" from the floor.. mind you, this is just as much a coin toss to aesthetics while listening for improvements-

seems to be a tad bright between 7khz and 14khz ...think we should unwind the coil some & send more frequencies to the woofers?
In reference to "unwinding", there is no choke (attenuator) in the series II, not in the schematic and not on my set (just checked). Is there a network schematic for the First Gen? If not can you reverse engineer and post?

I think I follow what you are saying, and that might help, but you could introduce some cone breakup as well, depending of course how far you go.

Seems the Series II woofer runs "wide open" as they say. No attenuator. Be interesting to run First Gen along side a pair of Series II (early) and Series II (late). Cap values in the "late" model would definitely have a different crossover.

Gotta get me a mic and software to do frequency sweeps. Sure would help some here.
