Bose 601 "owner" opinions please

I never had 601s but I have 501's. Once I changed the woofers out to better ones, the sound is great. They have been my garage speakers for many years now. Right now a Carver CT-24 preamp is feeding a Phase Linear 400 that's driving them

A better woofer....into a new pair of Bose cabinets? Share with us this profound discovery. . .

Closed this night with Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor...in HiFi stereo. I decided to use the surround feature on the EQ... Most pleasing- The soundtrack leaped into your lap

Will a tube amp be a good marriage with vintage Bose? I seem to recall Onkyo releasing a line of either tube amps or tube-hybrid amps a couple years ago...

Finally working on restoring a pair of 501 Series II. One cabinet is OK. The other was butchered, badly, to fit a 12" in place of the 10". I have a thread started and will update with images, maybe later this week. Have a new front baffle started.

Seems to me it would be a nice combo. Of course tubes aren't much different from SS in that each can have their own sound. But most people say tubes tend to be warmer. Might help bottom end and mids and take off some of the brightness in the high end, if that's a goal you'd like to achieve.

I think Copa nailed it.

Perhaps grab one of those inexpensive Chi-Fi tube amps, see if you like it.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering doing just that, and I haven't even HEARD my restored SX1250 that Mattsd just finished.

1250? Yeah baby. I'm so pissed, I missed one on CL for $300. Couldn't get a hold of the seller.

How I would love to stumble onto a 1980 ;)

Just this morning, I received a text from a buddy.

"Scored an Onkyo P308, M508 combo, oh, and a mint Pioneer SX1980."

Yeah, I hate that guy. :D:no:

I know a hoarder, drivers me nuts. He'll never use the stuff and very very rarely sells anything. One time I arrived just moments after he did at an estate sale. They had a set of Heath Kit speakers, took two guys to lift, that had JBL drivers. They were asking $40 for the pair and he offered $30 and got them for that. I would NEVER have made an offer, I would have handed over the $40 and loaded them up. Hate people like that, especially when they KNOW what they're buying. I checked later that day and a set was going for $1250 on eBay, not asking, that was where the bidding was.

He's got a garage full. I've bought many pieces from him, namely my NS690' Yammies, my Sony STR-7065A, JBL L100T's, etc.

He plans on flipping both. He'll make about 3000 bucks. Love the guy to death, tho. Helluva fella. Just wish I had that kind of luck.

Im good in all departments. After -what almost 2 weeks of straight auditioning, the 2080 & the Fisher perform to my tastes.. a little warmth with sharp low ends. My earlier remark on the 601 being a tad bright to my ear was way premature. And they are a sheer delight for movies. I'm grateful y'all opened this thread. Was contemplating the superglue trick to the backside under the dust cover, maybe add a brace here or there...but as is a sheer delight

Awesome!

How do the 601s work as fronts in a 5.1 setup? Wouldn't the reflection make it less accurate?
Just speculating here, but I would figure (based on similar discussions with 901 speakers) that the reflected would have a similar effect as having "side" speakers in your surround setup. This is one of the things I was considering prior to going 7.1 (which I haven't followed through with yet). BUT, now that Dolby Atmos is becoming more accepted I'm holding off further HT changes.

My only honest complaint is watching movies via the internet where most titles are streamed in 5.1- as such, the dialog is under the sound fx and score the way filmmakers amp up the drama for today's youth. Hence, the need for a center channel (computer). But when I use the dvd player, the sound is properly converted into left-right stereo and the result is excellent. Im not a fan of 5.1....I think 5.1 was a terrible mistake forced on the film collectors. And I loathe the sight of even ONE wire with anything electrical. And Trying to hide 30' of 5.1 wiring is a joke. I dont want my entertainment to look like some lab experiment. Its furniture in my home and is cared for like everything else. I go ballistic if the antenna wire is dangling. My speaker wires are hidden under the base board once I know ths speakers are there to stay. Yep, Im a prick about such things!

You're correct on all points...the 601's speaker arrangement does stellar work for dvd films. I have a very nice JVC 5.1 thats acting as a backup atop a closet shelf somewhere here!

I'd like to suggest two corrections:

  1. Very few streamed titles are available in 5.1 mixes. The overwhelming majority of films available on Netflix and Amazon Prime are a Dolby Pro Logic mix.
  2. I don't believe that the use of 5.1 or any of its other variants that demand more and more speakers has anything to do with the tastes of today's youth. Instead, I would chalk it up to the desires of film makers to create a more immersive experience, to break down the barrier the proscenium creates. Consider movies like Master and Commander or Brother Where Art Thou? While M&C clearly has moments of intense surround action, the most surprising scenes are like the opening scene where you follow a character through the ship on his way to gather eggs to make the captain's breakfast. Quiet and understated, the surround mix is beautiful, putting you in the middle of the ship, not outside looking in. The use of a good surround mix is as important in drawing you into the movie as it was for Spielberg's use of camera angles to put you in Eliot's shoes in E.T. Not all film makers target the video gaming crowd for their movies. But they almost all use surround mixes because they know it works.

Two excellent films that I have, including bonus soundtracks. Tasteful rebuttal. Watched Wrath of the Titans today via internet. I wasn't drawn into the film. I was annoyed with the overbearing audio amplifications applied to a falling rock or a body slam during a dialog. Master/ Commander is one of my favs. And the Bose pay justice to the audio track through an old RCA player. please tell me why the dialog audio is lower than the special fx when viewing alot of new titles via the net...

Im old enough to still enjoy Casablanca. Amped Audio FX wouldn't add much IMHO. Besides... this is a vintage thread aimed at people who know you cant deliver real audio from a plastic box. And you cant beat a coke with a paper straw!
