By the way, one argument has always been "wattage". Of those who have said "reality check" I agree. You're only going from the network to the respective drivers, not 20 or more feet in distance.

Amperage is what destroys most electrical devices, hence using large gauge wire for high amperage tools and such. If you had enough amperage to burn 18ga wire, you'd fry a VC at least as quickly, or faster in the case of a tweeter.

Interesting find, and glad you shared. Until I had genuine Epi woofers in my Model 20's, I used the realistic knock offs. Sounded pretty darn good.

I share your concern on the dust caps, but if it is that much a deal, why not buy some new ones and cut out old ones? I saw some on speakerworks.com for cheap.

As for solar energy, every day is a fight with the established power companies, who clearly see the writing on the wall, and decide sticking their heads in the sand is a viable alternative. It will come, whether they lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.

As I've understood it, from past reading, research, etc. the primary advantage of the smaller drivers is midbass and above, but by having two units in sink you can also make up for there weakness which is bass extension. Less a tradeoff than say the Mach One which has sufficient bottom end but can't reach where it needs to when crossing over with the midrange. If only they went with a 2" or 3" mid horn, which could have reached lower in the registry taking some heat off the woofer. Oh well, still love my Mach One.

I need to make a decision on those woofers, either the 301 or 601.
 
I'm looking at a power amp. the seller tells me I need a pre-amp. Doesn't the typical amp have input selector fairy various inputs, TT. etc...

I need a crash course and someone holding my hand. I'm told McIntosh works the same way. I feel like this is over my head. Please help ASAP

That's correct, the T-200 were towers but for the Bose 501 cab, the single 10" upgrades are a big improvement over the Bose driver. The speakers are no longer overwhelmed by the Phase Linear 400 driving them. The extra power handling is a bonus
 
Well, I lost out on an 1801 amp since I'm ignorant on how to setup one. I priced pre-amps on the bay and became light-headed...

I'm giddy over the fact that the Shack made superior drivers on or above par as substitutes. Man, I miss the old days of the Shack-

So now I must rethink using two smaller woofers in a horn arrangement I have on the drawing board...can I employ a passive radiator in a horned cabinet similar to the Klipsch Bell?

That sounds doable. Check out the RS T-110, I have a pair. http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/html/1983/h022.html

If you have a Mac, likely the Pre section is better than MANY standalone preamps out there. Doesn't your Mac have pre-out connections? If so, you could run those to some big power amps if you like.

I came across those 601 woofers the other day. That was the reason for my post. They're from original 601 speakers and are slightly different from Series II. On one hand there are the 301 using the same driver except for dust cap, and the early 601 having the correct dust cap but different magnet/motor assembly. I'm still leaning towards the 301 woofers. The 601 don't appear to need surrounds.

Who here has the early 601? They do have foam surrounds, correct?

I have two receivers that use pre-out/main jacks....if I brought hone a power amp, I'd be in the dog house.

At least I know now. I'm probably going to get both pairs. I have an offer in for the 601 and will contact the owner of the 301 drivers today. I'd say it's for a good cause. This weekend I'll pick up where I left off with the 501 speakers.
