Boston Acoustics A400 Buying/Repair Advice

Wow two sets of A400's up for sale that close to each other. What part of the world are you located? I really like my A200's but I'd love to try the A400's.
 
Eastern Canada. A little far from you. Very odd yes 2 sets in small city. This set is priced higher at $500 CAD ... and the seller now says the woofers are reconed so not a great buy

Na man, it's not that far. :rolleyes: I'll just grab a bunch of CD's, get a case of Rockstar to guzzle, gas up the jalopy and I'll be there in no time. First let me check the forecast :eek:...uh, well maybe this coming spring. o_O

Might want to find out what the seller means by "reconed"- that word can mean different things to different people, and wouldn't NECESSARILY be a bad thing, depending on what was, in fact, done.
 
I believe BA offered a replacement woofer at one time that was identical to the original with the exception of the cone being some kind of polymer instead of the original paper. The material looks a lot like these on the Argonauts.

I just took some 400's out of my main system tonight (db94 knows why) and put the 150's back in their place. What a killer speaker for the money, If money is a concern, they are very close to the 400's in my opinion.
 
Seller is a long time musical instrument dealer and know what a recone is. Plus is hard to deal with or I would be on them.

The guy that sold me mine said the part came from Boston. I have no idea if true. The cones are dark plastic looking material. Sounds good.
 
A pic of my a400 beside the Sonus Faber they currently compete with. The Sonus melt into the room better and are more tight/clear/refined for sure. The a400 may even go lower but its not as tight as the Sonus. Still, not a total wash for the Bostons. Which is impressive considering the price difference. If I had to I could probably live with the a400 as my main speaker. An incredible feat for $300. The a400 are going into my workshop.

I totally agree with you there. The Boston Acoustics 'A' series represent one of the best values in audio today. With some maintenance and recapping they can outperform many current speakers at a fraction of the investment.
So Yamahaha, do you not use the stabilizer feet with your A400's?
 
Cant put them against the wall without moving the Sonus around. And that isnt happening. The feet/stands did not come with. If anyone has the dimensions (height especially) of the stands I would appreciate that info. I have a full shop and can easily make them.

Awesome thank you for that. I will make some stands one day. I might even put a Brazilian rosewood veneer on the cabinets. Not a fan of oak and the cabs show age. Of course, designated for the workshop anyway I wont go to wild with them.

Someday, just for s#!t & giggles prop those 400's with the back flat against the wall then step back and give 'em a listen.:)

Black grills, tan grills or no grills at all?
