Burhoe Crimsons - WOW!

Its been a while since I purchased or even felt a need to purchase new speakers. But today came across these Burhoe speakers and somehow name made me take a second look at them. Well built, quality wood and components as far as I could tell. Small, but that was a plus, as I dont really have room for large speakers. So, I decided to go for it. Later I read up a bit on this brand and it seems that these are very well respected and even somewhat rare speakers. Hooked them up - and WOW! for a 4 inch woofer and their small size they really do fill the room with clean and clear sound with lows I would have never expected from them. They put some modern Polks and Pioneer BS22LRs to SHAME!!!! What a cool speaker! Glad I decided to give them a chance and for a very very reasonable price too!

Does anyone have any experience with these? What do you guys think of them?

I have heard a couple of pairs of Burhoe (Blue and Green) and they sound, well, like music. Winslow Burhoe's "module" (woofer, dome tweeter, simple crossover) are basically what is in the EPI 100. Lots more here: http://directacoustics.com/
 
You don't see very many Burhoes. I had a single Light Blue I rescued from somewhere, tweeter was dead and I ended up swapping the woofer to an AKer who needed one. Too bad those inverted dome tweeters aren't easily fixable. The tweeter on your Crimson doesn't look inverted - or is that a trick of the light?
 
It's not inverted - its a Burhoe dome. I have two pairs of Crimsons, one pair with the small dome (one of which doesn't work) and the other with the larger than EPI inverted dome. They sound surprisingly big.
 
The Light Blue had an inverted EPI-like tweeter but it was a bit larger, I suppose to dip down into the midrange. 1.5TL I think it said on it. I did not know Burhoe used domes.
 
I had a pair of either Burhoe Blue or White but they didn't have the original woofers but they still sounded fantastic! The designer of your speakers and all the Burhoe line was Wilfred Burnie of EPI fame. He developed the inverted tweeter which in my opinion was one of the best tweeters of all time!

I had some Burhoe White’s years ago and they really made an impression on me. You rarely see any for sale. Hold on to em! :)
 
I am debating if I should recap them. They sound really good as is, but maybe recap will make them sound even better? On the other hand, maybe I should keep them all original? Any thoughts?
 
If you recap them, unsolder the old caps rather than cut them out, and hang onto them until you are sure the new ones are an improvement. Which may take a fair while, since initially all we hear are the differences that are obvious, and sometimes it's only later, after the thrill of newness is gone, and we stop focusing on the specific improvements that we hear the less pleasing aspects of the change.

If I am unsure if a recap is necessary, I will recap one speaker and do an A/B comparison with the other speaker with original caps. Typically I can detect an audible difference between the recapped and original cap speakers.

If you have a RTA use that while playing noise through the speakers. I don't have a RTA so I use a phone app that displays frequency response. There are times when I rely upon the FR graph to see if there is an objective difference between the two.
